I get depressed and melancholy I can't stand to read. I won't work and I'm so cranky 1 try to instigate an argument with anyone around I'm so miserable with it. I make the whole world around me miserable too Framie it just beside herself And it just has to run its course, what with no cure in sight I used to work on the model rad ruad when I was down with it and that helped a little Scott brought over some new computer pro grams the other day and fooling around with a new autoexec hat file helped for a couple o f days But now I've found a sure cure for the winter doldrums By accident I happened across an old seed catalog buried in a stack o f '88 tax records From just that little beginning. I rounded up a whole col lection o f seed catalogs and began to study the pictures o f spnng and sum mer flowers and vegetables, and herbs Making decisions about what to grow and where and how much really chased the doldrums aw ay. I made up a map o f the old garden area, added some new ground and started putting in the names o f the old crops and some new ones too That meant I had to go to the library and read up on these new crops so I could take best advantage o f companion crop pnn ciples I even spent a sunny afternoon, cold as it was. out stepping o ff the new ground and planning the extension that would he required to the irrigation system Soon. I had a seed order in the mail, and have thought about all the additional planning that will he required before spnng Gosh, there's lots to be done and even though it's only January , there's precious little time to do it all Spring will he here all too soon and the winter doldrums are gone This cure will work whether you plan only a tiny window box o f kit chen herbs or several thousand acres o f winter wheat The operative fac- tor is thinking about spnng. planning fc>r spring, refreshing your knowledge that spnng will come in spite o f us all One warning, don't ever go hack to those '88 tax records That's a sure cause o f a relapse Senior mealsite serves dinner The Heppner Mealsite served 73 people at the Christmas dinner on December 14. with 7 out-of-town guests Harnet Batty won a free din ner Anna Mac Steagall and Sophie Ayers won the door prizes The mealsite served 5 1 people at their birthday dinner on December 28. with two out-of-town guests from Spray Gladys Munker* won the free dinner. Obituary % Stella M . Fielding Stella M Fielding. 93. o f Her- miston. died Sunday. Jan I, 1989 at the Good Samantan Center Graveside service was Tuesday at Lincoln Memonal park in Ponland A memorial serv ice will he held later in (he week at Good Samaritan Center in Hermision. She was bom Feb. 22. 1895. at Albany, daughter o f l>emuel and Rose N Stove and had spent most o f her life in Oregon with brief periods in Michigan. Montana and Washington In 1919, she married Harold S Fielding The couple had 11 children, four o f whom died in infancy During World W ar II. she work ed as a welder at one o f the Portland shipyards and was also an excellent restaurant cook She had been a resident o f Her- miston from 196b 1976 and from 1982 until her death S u rvivors include daughters Virginia Christensen and Crystal Huber, both o f Portland. Pat Olson o f Vernon la and Joy Mullin o f Hepjs ner, a son. Charles M. o f Calistoga, Calif; II grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren Tw o other sons died earlier Memorial contributions may he made to the Good Samaritan Center Nursing Fund Bums Mortuary.
