Letters to the Editor
Do you know these people?
To the Editor
Do you know these people'
They always have time to:
Give a hug. wipe a nose, find an
extra pair of gloves, say no to map
propriatc behavior, tom b the hair
and tidy the clothing for pictures,
listen when a child just needs to talk,
make Hnglish. math, science and
economics exciting, identify talents
in music, photography, speech,
shop, drama, etc, encourage a child
to he the best he/she can he each day
Are you aware that this is happen
mg to your child, or grandchild each
day that you send him/her to our
schools under the supervision of
Morrow County Teachers?
Your child leaves the classroom
each dnv <• liitlr wiser in reading,
writing and arithmetic and with the
knowledge of their own self worth
That hug in the third grade when
your child could not do one thing
right, did make a difference
What a Christmas gift to let a
teacher know that he she did make
or is making a difference in your
child's life.
If you haven't jotted a note to your
child's classroom teacher yet this
year, Christmas is a great time to
communicate that you appreciate
their pari in helping your child
become a responsible leader of
tomorrow
Merry Christmas

Update given on forest service plan
To the Editor
As 1988 draws to a close it seems
appropriate to update the local public
on where we re at with the forest
plan After the draft was published
and comments received. I asked for
help from the local public in
developing a "preferred alternative"
for the future management of the
Heppner Ranger District
In July and August we hosted a
couple of field trips to view on the
ground management activities
These field trips were well attended
and provided the participants a
chance to express their likes and
dislikes as to how management ac
tivities were being conducted on the
forest A working committee was
then formed to “ roll up their
sleeves" and address the issues and
concerns expressed by the various
interests This committee consisted
of a core gniup of volunteers
representing the wood products in
dustry, recreation, grazing, fish and
wildlife, small woodlands owner«,
conservationists, the local business
com m unity; and county/local
government While this core com
mittee was the working gnnip.
others attended the meetings and
provided
input
to
th eir
representatives
This committee met regularly
from Septem ber 20 through
November 7 to present their views

I
To the Editor:
Communication leads to solutions
lack of communication compound
cd hy miscommunication currently
breeds a crisis in the Morrow Coun
ty School District
I am a public school teacher in
Morrow County Every day I must
communicate with other teachers,
parents and administrators Every
day I must communicate with over
a hundred and fifty young students
If I communicate poorly, unfairly,
or inaccurately, my world becomes
chaos Poor communication leads to
failure An assignment fails Expec-
tations meet disappointment Resent
ment brews
Currently, the Board of Directors
of the Morrow County School
District courts chaos, failure and
resentment hy deciding to not com
municate with teachers They refuse
to negotiate, apparently believing
(hat the community supports such a
stance.
I am one o f many who reject the
notion that our citizens have this
manner of poor judgement Our
citizens support Morrow County
Schools I am writing to encourage
these people to let their feelings he
know n,
to
encourage
communication
i^ct the Board of Directors know
your thoughts and feelings They
need to know they are making a
mistake about your judgement regar
ding public education I have includ
ed a list of board members and their
telephone numbers Give them a
quick call, especially if the last time
you communicated with them was
through the polls Don't make the
same mistake (hey arc making

and preferences and to resolve dif
ferences Early on it became obvious
that everyone would not be able to
have everything they wanted with
respect to (I k future management of
the Heppner Ranger District Com
promise was the name of the game
and after several work sessions ten
tative agreement was reached con
tingent upon outputs pmjected from
the Forest Service computer model
There arc numerous changes from
the draft plan resulting in repmgram
ming of much of the infomvatH>n in
put into the computer
Since these outputs will not be
available until early January, we
have placed everything on hold un
til then We now plan to meet the
evening of January 17. 1989 to
review these outputs and finalize the
public recommendation for the
future management of the Heppner
Ranger District
I will keep the local residents in
formed of our progress as we move
towards adoption of the final plan
and then into the implementation of
that plan
I want to thank everyone that has
contributed their time and energy so
far and would encourage them to
stay involved and help us monitor
activities as they develop under the
fKVfc plan

Hospital Notes
Fresh, crisp

the season to
thanks, friend« "
As the magical time of Christmas ap
proaches, we have a strong wish for
Peace A state of tranquility, bmtlier
treating brother as a brother, families
and neighbors and friends together,
happy, content Peace The antithesis
of war. freedom from strife, controver
sy and conflict
Our wish extends to the Middle East
where war really does dominate, peo
ple die. families are tom. strife and
conflict rules the entire lives o f so
many
And to Northern Ireland. South
Africa and Central America Even
though US and Soviet relations are bet
ter now than for years, much of the
world is at war The worst kind of war Neighbors fight neighbors and
friends fight fnends
It is our wish that Peace could permeate these areas of the world
But our wish also extends to our own fnends and neighbors (Xir schools
are at war. teachers and the distnet arc in conflict for want of a contract
Our wish is that peace should come, and soon, so that all concerned can
get on with educating our children
Our Port Distnet is in turmoil A major tenant. Lamb-Weston, has cut
hack hourly employ ment to a third, in part because of high sewer and water
rates The voters have rejected tax revenues to help lower them and in
the midst of it all. t)ic Port Manager has resigned May peace come to
the Port
Our fnends in Irrigon have rejected a tax levy that would have put them
in the top twenty of 260 cities in Oregon Consequently, the street lights
have been turned off. the police laid off and cay government literally closed
down May peace come to our own neighbors in Irrigon
The county, its Medical Board and St Anthony Hospital have had some
difficulties The Planning Commissnin has recently wrestled with its role,
or lack of it, in developing an Economic Development Strategy
It is our wish, in the coming year, that all these folks are able to hear
and consider other points of view and that all of us approach our prob- '
lcm\ with a plan for solution that takes into account the needs and wants *
of our neighbors If we work hard at it. Peace will come
