November 20-26. iv National Family C aregiverv Week Congrcvv h u designated the week to honor the in valuable contributions of families who provide 80 percent of all the care to the frail elderly in the U S Thousands of individuals are caught up in a growing phenomenon of modern life caregiving These people are in the workplace, cutting back on hours and using vacation time to care for frail mothers They are at home, providing around the clock care for chronically ill spouses. They arc performing housekeeping chores for moderate ly confused fathers who arc deter mined to maintain self-esteem and independence All of these people are carcgivtng They are responsible for some or all of the care of another per v in The numbers of people needing such care will continue to grow From 1*480 to 2000, experts project a 31 percent increase nationally in the number of people with limited aclivity who need care Oregon can expect a 60 percent increase large ly due to the aging of the state s population While many social and medical programs focus on the impaired per son. it is support for the family that often enables the ill person to remain at home A caregiver who gets out side support can more likely carry out his or her responsibilities and continue to function and be productive Caregivers are part of an increas ingly important resource that is meeting the needs of the frail elder ly and disabled persons The Oregon Association of Hospitals and the American Association of Retired Persons join in the national celebra non of the family caregiver Many hospitals have planned special events and educational programs for caregivers during the week This week of recognition gives Orego nians an opportunity to thank all caregivers who give their lime. k>ve and assistance to care for frail pco pic in the community.
