Mike Jones of Bend and Mel Schuldt of Enterprise, had fish totalling 17 'A pounds with a *'big fish" of 12 pounds Sunday morning the fishermen again encountered heavy winds at their 6 a m start By the I p m weigh in the wind had calmed inak ing a gorgeous day at tournament end The end of the Derby saw Nicholes and Bates holding their Saturday lead, with their Sunday catch of six walleye bringing their total weight to 55 pounds 7 ounces This was a catch and release touma ment. Nicholes and R»trs released The Boardman Fivhin' Derby, P«rt of the Manner Open Walleye Classic, was won August 13 A 14 by a team of local fishermen Bruce Nicholes and Frank Bates of Board man were able to honk more of the elusive walleye than any of the other 19 teams from our western states. Nebraska or Wisconsin They had a total weight of 55 pounds 7 ounces Second place went to Mike Jones and Mel Schuldt. with a two day total weight of 31 pounds 12 ounces third place was won by another local team, Ben Diggs and Ixe Docken. with 16 pounds 12 ounces all caught the second day • Saturdays competition sUrted with strong winds and rough river, less than ideal conditions The weather kept some of the fishermen off the water, but the prize offered by Mariner to the winning team of this tournament (fishing with a profes sion in the Mid West in the Spring of 198V) kept IV boats in the river five of their last six fish and the overall release ratio was about three out of four fish weighed in There was a one ounce bonus offered for all fish released alive Nicholes and Bates are now look ing forward to the Spring of 1989 when they will join the winning teams from the 14 other sanctioned tournaments sponsored by Manner Outboards They both say they are really proud to be going to this walleye tournament of champions and they hope to bring viine recogni lion to our wonderful Columbia River and the walleye fishing that thnves in our waters When asked about the tournament and si/cs of fish caught, tournament director and local Pro-Guide.
