I mean we really showed 'em Them folk» from Nebraska and Wisconsin and esen a little those fellows from Bend and Enterprise and did we ever show cm up in Umatilla and Irngon I really didn't have much to do with it hut I've never passed up a chance to ride on some one else's aval tails The real heroes arc Bruce Nicholes (Ml Valley Land Co ) and Frank Bates (Dewey's Chevron). And did they B> Ed Glenn show 'em You see. about a year ago a few fellows from Boardman went out fishing and called u a walleye tournament They had a ka of fun and maybe somebody even caught a fish, nobody was really keeping score Not to be out done, that cra/y mayor up in Umatilla just up and pnv claimed thai high and dry city as the Capital of Walleye Fishing The Johnny -come-latelys in Irngon claim to be the Walleye Capital, and neither has any basis in fact Boardman is the Walleye Capital o f the World and everyone who ever dunked a worm knows it Even the folks at Manner Outboard Motors suspect it. so they included the Boardman tournament as one o f the 15 they would sponsor around the county leading up to the World Championships And it ssas that tournament a week or so hack where Nicholes and Bates really showed 'em 55 pounds o f walleye in two days Thirteen and a quarter pounds for the big fish--by Nicholes The professionals Mike Jones and Mel Schuldt could only muster sc cond place hui Ben Diggs (Telephone Utilities) and Lee Dockcn (Mt Valley Land Co.) (that's right the real estate business is so bad they 've all gone fishing) slipped into third out o f the 19 teams Ben's big fish of over 10 pounds finished third as well Nicholes' fish was larger than any caught in any o f the Mariner tour naments so far and probably will be the big fish of the year When it's all over this fall. Mariner won't be able to get out o f holding the World Championships right here at the Walleye Capital o f the World next year Nicholes and Bales arc off to the World Championships and we'll hear from them again We won't hear any more from the folks in Umadlla nor Irngon (hough AS I SEE IT Special efforts made for Fair & Rodeo M arriage Licenses To the Editor I want to compliment the ap pcarancc of the grounds and buildings of the Morrow Couaty Fair and Rodeo this year As I understand, a special effort was made hy ihc Rawlins’ of Heppner. To the Editor: As a 4 H mother for the first lime (his year. I sat through (he judging of 4-H projects in three different departments and watched the judg ing on some of the contests at the Morrow Counts Fair I was xery im pressed with (he quality of the judg ing. particularly with the interviews between the judges and 4 H members The judges in all three departments that I observed were very positive and very helpful to the 4 Hers in future learning As a parent. I have to admit I learned some things from ihc |udges For those who do not know how it works, (he 4-H judges sit down with each 4 H member to review the project, evaluate it. and make sug gestions for future improvements I found all of Ihc comments very positive and very useful I would urge people next year to observe part of ihc judging As adults in i»pen ».lass, wc do not cet W C C C G olf Club Championship 27 holes Thursday, August 4 Flight A low gross first Pat Fd round son. 112; second Anita Boyer, 121. third Harriet Pierson 127 Flight B low gross first Jo Petty john. 152. second Lavella Sonstagard. However, either way the decision goes, to invest more money in the landfill and keep it open, or close it down and have our garbage hauled to Hermiston. there will be an effect on the people o f Heppner. If the dump is closed we will lose a local business, and the flexibility and convenience o f having a local garbage hauler Heppner Sanitary owner Cliff Green has said that if he must haul Heppner garbage to Hermiston, it will cause a rate increase that makes his service uncompetitive. If we lose local service, most likely Hermiston Sanitary would begin pickup in Heppner How would rates be maintained then'.’ Would we be at the mercy of an out-of-town hauler with no competition to keep rates reasonable? Additional y. not only is the landfill used to dump trash from the local garbage col lector. but also many people use the dump to dispose of grass clippings, broken and used household items, and other junk from around the house Where would this trash end up'’ Possibly in the nearest canyon. On the flip side, because o f the increased requirements from the Department o f Environmental Quality, it is getting more and more expensive to operate the city landfill The days are over when a hole is dug, garbage dumped, and the whole pile covered up with dirt and forgotten The DEQ requires garbage dumps to be tested for leaching, or water seepage, as well as other environmental tests. These costs will be borne by the city, and ultimately the tax paying townspeople, if the dump is to remain open These and other questions will be addressed at a special city council meeting this Thursday night at 7 p m. Concerned citizens should be there. David Sykes We Showed 'Em % * e* . **• # . 4 : f Pw m a*
