Aug. 20 is Irrigon’s Fifth Annual
Watermelon Festival
The fifth Annual Irrigon
Watermelon Festival «ill he held on
August 20 The Irrigon Lions Club
will be hosting the Watermelon
Pickers Breakfast from 6 a m till 10
a m at the Manna Park The Fun
Run begins at 8 a m at the Manna
park For walkers and runners of all
ages, the run has a I0K. SK and a
I mile distance which wanders
through the city and on inn the
county before returning to the star
ting point Runners should be pre-
registored by August 12 to guarantee
a t-shirt on race day Registration
packets and late registration will be
available between 7-7 45 a m race

The Watermelon Festival Parade
gets under way at 10 a m on Main
Street and includes a "Kiddie
Parade". Festivities begin at the
Manna Park at the completion of the
parade Several exhibitions are
planned including a sheep shearing
demonstration by former New
Zealander and Mayor of Umatilla.

The latest in farm machinery is
now residing in Boardman Ivan
Cook and Dave Murdock's own
completely automated alfalfa
compressor
After seven months of hard work.
the alfalfa compressor is complete
The compressor was built from
scratch After about a year of
thought, Ivan Cook contacted Dave
Murdock and dies designed wire and
hydrolic diagrams to make sure it
would all work when completed
I he compressor takes 40", 130
lb bales and with 175 tons of push,
compresses them to 18" hales, pnv-
ducing six bales a minute
The alfalfa is all locally bought
and prepared for shipment overseas,
where it is used for dairy cattle
The purpose of compressing the
alfalfa, is to fit more into the shipjv
mg containers
By the end of the year, they plan
to hire 5-6 people fulltime to help
with all the compressing and
loading
