County emergency food distribution
center in Irngon has increased, ac

organized to assist low income level

Frederickson. owner of the stand
Some of his watermelons are grown in his own fields, the
rest are grown locally by Bob Kenney of Kenney Farms or
Eastern Oregon Farms, located on Patterson Ferry Road
Frederickson has been in the melon business for twenty
years. "Actually, I was born in a melon patch," Frederickson
said with a grin.
A wide variety of melons are sold at the stand such as Crim
son Sweet, Old Blue Ribbon, All Sweet and Stripped Klondike.
"W e’ll soon have twelve different varieties of cantaloupe and
muskmelons." said Frederickson

Many aphids thrive in weather like
we had this spring They don’t do so
well in the hotter times, however So
they built up a population in the
spring and. as the warmer weather
came on and beneficial insects in
creased, they disappeared They
have been a problem on willow
birch, and locust trees 1c.in still find
plenty on the locust, hut not on the
others
Fungi like cool weather, too
Powdery mildew, common on n>ses,
was found on apple apricot, pear and
other fruit trees With the onset o f
warmer weather it stops being a pro
blem. but it leaves behind a legacy
o f spotted leaves and scabby fruit
Next spring, it this is a problem for
you now. spray a sulfur solution at
about (lowering time
Apple and pear trees arc suscepu
blc to fire blight, a bacterial disease
which is spread by such spring
weather This is a very serious
disease The tree looks like a blow
torch hit it Limbs become scorch
ed looking and die It is a disease
specific to pears and apples, in
eluding crabapplc
The cure is to cut out all diseased
material, and to disinfect the prun
ing shears or saw between each cut
If you suspect you have this disease,
confirm it by bringing a sample to
the Extension office

will soon have even more to offer
than its "H is Place" Restaurant. Hi>-
ly Roller Rink. Arcade with ping
pong, pool, card and table names,
puzzles, books and motel What else

By August 10, they hope to have
completed a weight room in the cor

Howard Wheeler, who runs the
Boardman Christian Center, will
also make the skating rink area
available for aerobics for those w ho
are interested
They hope to set up an outside
area for volleyball, basketball, bad
minton and horseshoes in the near
future
