The railroads in Morrow County were 100 years old this year and the group at the vug gestion o f Dominic Monahan from New York, sponsored a contest lor junior high students These were judged and the three highest receiv ed money awards and the school gave certificates ("D om inic is a la w y e r in Washington for the government and he sent $50 for the first prize with the Society matching the amount Those receiving awards were First place Alecia Tamasky. second place Peter Pearson and third place Shawn Cutsforth A committee o f Pat Wright and M illie Rauch contacted the schools and got the project underway Presenting the awards were Millie Rauch and Delpha Jones President o f the Morrow County Historical Society The Society greatly appreciated the effort hy the teachers and students in this project and the school for including the ladies in the award night Dinosaurs are the theme for the ‘ Be a Dino M ile Reader' summer reading program, being sponsored jointly for the first time hy the Hepp- ncr Elementary School and the Heppner Public l ibrary The kick-off date is June 13 and continues to August 15 at the Public Library and August 22 at the sch»*ol library The school's hours are Mon days 10 a m to 12 noon and Wednesdays I p m to 3 p m The Public Library will maintain their current hours Hooks checked out at either library arc counted in one total Participants can cam an ice cream treat A W j acw this year is a compeli lion tor whoever reads the most bonks as o f August 15.
