Ju n e I , IW * Bike-a-thon is June 12 Jr. Olympics results Letters to the Editor m — M - The Hcppncr Bike A Thun for Si Jude's Children's Hospital will he June 12 at (he fairgrounds. from 3 p m until 7 p m Volunteers «re Keep up the good work To the E d ito r: Thank you for the coverage and exposure during (he past election As time passes the unity and co operation that are needed to build a better community for us all w ill he greatly served by a more w idely read newspaper I urge you to seek more readers in Im g o n and Boardman The coverage and ph**os of the en tire country are essential to the enlightment and enjoyment of our marvelous area N o other media can help to bring us together like your paper please continue to grow and include all ideas and areas in your journal of the community Thank you to (hose who sup ported. helped and voted for me O u r idea of government that is resfsmsive. fair and thnfty will gn>w and become the dominant idea in the country The concerns about our roads which we daily use and the other services that government is charged with providing must be communicated to our elected o f ficials Y our votes for me espress concern and awareness, you must demand to be heard The apathy (hat is tolerated in this county is an cm harassment to me as I try to en courage my teenage children to be interested in the areas of their life that they can create an impact upon W e must get more people involved, or the roads will continue to be rough, the services poor or non existent and special intersts get the lion share of tax support The unemployment rate in M or row County has been in the twenty percent and thirty percent brackets in the past year Deon. my IdHKhigh school graduate deserves a better economic opportunity W e haven't created anywhere near enough jobs o r business activity The great government agriculture programs we have rewarded the weak and ineffi cient and drained capital that fueled our local economy and created gmwth Most of the great reward for idleness and being unproductive is collected as Sderal taxes So citizens o f M o rro w C o u n ty . grab your hoot straps and get on with it Tourism , recreation, senior retirement are all areas that a little effort will make a difference A community with low taxes and utility awls, whose citizens are aware, concerned and involved will always grow and pmsper. especially with our great natural climatic advantages Hopefully this campaign and communication will encourage at least one more reader to get off their duff and volunteer or seek office or be involved Thanks for listening (s) Te d Sampson Democratic Primary Candidate in M orrow County Im g o n . Oregon One solution to an improved economy T o the Editor N o one reading the ( )rcgonian this past Sunday could ignore the fact that Oregon is undergoing difficult economic times Unfortunately, more service jobs w ill not provide the revenue necessary to support our families, our sclnxils. our businesses or our State and local governments It is evident we need to process our produce here in M orrow Coun ty to achieve more income for our area If we can accomplish this, all o f us living here would benefit Sup port for needed services would not be brutally slashed N o one can accomplish this tor us O u r own initiative is all we can rely on to correct the current disastrous course our rural economy is taking Having been appointed to the Regional Strategy Committee for Economic Development for Morrow County. I have had the occasion to ponder what products we need to process and what markets would provide the most sales It didn't take more than 2 minutes, o f course, to enumerate wheat, cattle and lumber So I was musing over this at a fast food restaurant while eating lunch with Judic lau ghlin and Claudia Hughes It naturally followed that I wondered aloud what fast food would provide a sale for our pro ducts And Judic responded with the idea o f a beef stick, saying that she had fixed them at home loiter. I surmised that just one more fast food of similar quality to what is already available would not have the attraction (hat a really healthy fast food would engender So I proposed a health compatible pro duct, in keeping with “ The New Am erican D ie t" and the " la v in g Heart ” diet It has been ascertained that a certain level of cholesterol is — — necessary for hormone development in children, although additional fat remains harmful Since the Condon community was looking for a use for their defunct air base I addressed my inquiries to Judge Pryor of G illia m County H ow ever, the necessary water that would be needed for a slaughter house probably was not available, plus the transportation would have been more of a problem, so I believe Condon wishes to pursue a product made from wheat Boardman, of course, has no limitations such as these So I would like to submit this pro posal for consideration o f M orrow County residents W ould our com munities consider investing some time and money in such a proposal ’ Could it be a possibility for all coun ty residents who wish to participate to form a corporation and invest small sum s’ Visions of our production jobs, expanded feedlots, a slaughter house, a stick manufacturing opera turn, as well as increased markets for all our products, dance through my head I feel reasonably confident that we could secure a low cost loan to test how the market might respond to such a product Sen Packwixxl has expressed interest in our economic devekipment, ami Gov Goldschmidt appears to wish all the different areas to develop their own strategies to the best of their abilities W ould not this self-help approach to e co n o m ic d e ve lo p m en t be preferable to buying a tew lottery tickets?
