Houghton wound up their studies on early pioneer days hy celebrating their own pioneer day recently Early pioneer household methods were observed by the students such as churning butter, demonstrated bv Iscbcl Jones, washing clothes in a bucket with a plunger type- apparatus and steps on how to make home made soap were demonstrated by Vera Cooley Senior citi/cn s, Ruth Bentley and Dorothy Irish, showed the students that pioneer life could also be fun “ We had no toys.“ said Bentley. “ so we had to entertain ourselves And entertained the students were, w ith games like spin the plate and wink urn “ You had to watch out for the kerosene la m p ." said Bentley The unique art o f cutting whistles from w illow branches was explain ed by NAalt Sinclair “ It is a matter o f cutting them right and pulling the bark o ff the end.“ he said “ After shaping the end o l the whistle, you slip the bark back on Ice cream hand cranked by senior citizens from Stokes I anding Senior Center in a 12' year old ice cream freezer, and buffalo meat, were savored as part o f the days experiences Fourth grade teachers.
