I have seen attempts Glenn al selective logging in lodge pole pine W hat a disaster Now I dream of the day when all the lodge pole pine has hern clear cut and replanted to a nice even aged stand of Pondcnisa Everywhere, except o f course. Ihc lodge pole thicket over on Muddy Creek where I intend to connect with a big bull elk this fall Back to the public outcry As I sec it. we are all a little fearful o f change We've seen selective logging work for a lot o f years and few o f us arc really concerned about the long term productivity o f our forests We are also most ingenious in conjuring up a rationalization for our fear We worry aNmi the loss of a potential, the change in a stream flow (isn't that the very reason for the W illow Creek Dam ’ ), alteration o f the en vironment (isn’t man part of that environment ’ ) My fear iv that I'll have to learn a new way and maybe a new place to hunt Av a boy ycarv ago. I remember seeing photographs o f the Black Forest in Germany I wav terribly disillusioned to see checker board squares o f even aged trees, planted in cross checked rows like some apple orchard Maybe the Germans, in overcoming their fears o f change, learned something we fuse yet to accept ah*»ui, .»niuctiv ity . efficiency of harvest, improved species, that it isn’t wrong to tarm lumber trees like wheat and apples if our fear of change doesn't get in the way. maybe our grandchildren w ill be comfortable with those checker N>ard squares It not. it won't make any difference because our grandchildren w ill have to live in the city.
