January 30. February 9, will welcome Roger Williams, Forest Service, speaking on the Umatilla National Forest Management Plan Port meeting will be held February 10, 7 p m. at the Lcx- ington school house Their efforts to move meeting places to eliminate long drives is appreciated Reporting the news from the other side Since I've been writing this column, what, two or three months now1 I've become aware of the plight of new» reporters from the other side Our readers love us when we report about someone else But we re hated by those we report about And vmietimes it' the same people, just different stories Public bodies have the greatest paranoia about news reporting To some extern news reporters have caus ed that paranoia Public officials have found themselves exposed to public ridicule on the front pages every time things go wrong Conversely, there'» the tiniest insert on the hack page when things go right No wonder a school board or city council gets rattl ed when a reporter walks in to a meeting The reporter 's point of view , however. is only a reflection of his reader's expectation The reader expects the public body to do good When it does, that's no cause for excitement, only fulfilling an expectation But when things go bad. the reader wants to know, in great detail It's not the reporter the public officer should he concerned about, if* the public he serves In doing a piece about salaries of top ranking public officials and employees. I stirred up a lot of nervousness, and in one case a refusal to supply the requested information I guess I just assumed that when so me« >nc steps up (o accept the taxpayers' money, for compensation for ser vice to the taxpayers, it's everyone's business to know how much money is involved In doing an article about a landowner's failure to make payment on a local improvement district, and the resulting city'* default on municipal bonds, one comment was "That's far more than I would have liked to see printed " I've had the privilege to help do the public business for many years I’ve shared thal distaste for seeing one's name in the paper Now I'm see ing ihe issue from the other side Maybe we can report what is truly the public concern without reporting who's sleeping with whom We Print C heezy C h ick en N ugget* Microwave chicken nugget« and Mexican process cheese spread separately according to label direc tions Pour hot cheese sauce into small bowl and serve with nuggets for "dippers.” MICRO TIP: Reposition or rotate nuggets mid way during cooking to assure more even heat distribution.
