' <* *' j * » J By Casey Pedro Defence was the key in the Mustangs 9-7 win over rival River side Pirates last Friday night Heppner is now 3-0 in the Colum bia Basin Conference The Heppner Mustangs had nine players in double figures for defen sive points including four sacks, two interceptions and two fumble recoveries Riverside's longest play from the line of scrimmage was on ly 12 yards The game deciding fac tor came in the third quarter as Duane Ball and Craig Angcll tackl ed Rick Holden in the end /one for a safety. Heppner made its only score in the first quarter set up by Angell's fake punt 20 yard pass to Ball converting the first down and keeping the Mustang drive alive On the nest play, quarterback Dick Devin con nected with Ball in the end /one for a 3-yard pass play, with Angel! kick ing the extra point making the only score for either team in the first half In the third quarter. Angcll punted out-of- bounds inside Riverside's 10 yard line Thai set up Mustangs' safety which proved to be ihc game w inn ing denominator Ball, a senior, was selected Dclcn sisc player for his steady play al free safety Ball assisted on ihc safety with Angcll and had i>nc interception to stop a Riverside drive in the fourth quarter Ball had nine tackles and a total of 14 defensive points This season. The Faglcs won and latei went on to take first place in the tournament After waiting an hour to play again the Cardinals went up against the (ioldendale Wolverines lime put up a good struggle hut lost the valiant effort 11-15. Next on their grueling struggle was the excellent team put together by Columbia Christian Several players played well but i J k Cardinals seemed to base a lack of com munication and team work They again lost the game 15-12. Despite the three straight losses the Cardinals bounced hack lor the fourth game against the Wahtonka Junior Varsity fhe Cardinals played like a well oiled machine in their win. every one did well and teamwork was at a high as they defeated the Wahtonka Junior Varsity 15-11 Ihe next team they faced was the mighty Blue Devils of Condon Ihc game was close and ciHild have gone either way in the final minutes hut the Cardinals won 16-14 stunning the Blue Devils. Since the Cardinals had lost their first three games the most they could do was take third place if they managed to heat Goldendalc who had beaten them soundly the first time they had met But the Cardinals were confident in their team and their ability to play lough IS 6 Ihc Cardinals fought buck with tn tcnsitv snatching the second game 15 9 The change in the Cardinals play ing was due to players hustling and playing with the will to win Sophomore Jo Cupps did a superior jiih spiking to keep the Car dinals in faint W nh the game tied at one apiece the Cardinals, led by sophomore Linda M oner's serving and good spiking hy senior Rondi Tews, defeated Goldendalc 15-13 to take third place in ihc tournament l.m I U . 1* « i t u i . Cupps, a front wonng court starter, added several spikes of her own to lead the Cardinalv to a 15-13 victory in the second game The stage was set for the dramatic third game to decide the winner of the contest In the third game all of the players pulled together and communicated well Angie Rudisill dal an excellent job setting the hall Jo Cupps who was on the other end of Rudisill't good setting provided several kills in the third game But in the end the Grizzlies won the game 17-15 tak ing the match 2-1.
