C o m . tomatoes and small shruhs take water from the top one or two tcet ot soil They need watering less frequently than lawn grasses and leaty vegetables, which take water from |ust the upper eight to twelve inches o f soil Also, the amount ol water plants use each da) depends on temperature and wind conditions l se plant symptoms as a guide to the time tor irrigation When in need of water, many plants show a dark, hluish green color, or wilting, or both These symptoms first appear during the hottest part o f the day Another method is to use a shovel to check soil moisture content When garden soil is dry to a depth o f su inches watering is needed Each irrigation should provide |ust enough water to replenish what the plants have used Lor best results give the garden a thorough soaking and then don't irrigate again until n ecessary. F o llo w in g these guidelines usually means applying about one inch of water to the garden ever $ 7 days O f a h i r sc if weather Conditions change you'll have to ad lust how you irrigate accordingly Avoid frequent watering with s m a ll amounts of water Lhis results in excessive evaporation without deep wetting in the root /one and en courages surface nans that w ill suf fer from drought unless the surface is kept damp Hand sprinkling isn't effective because sufficient water is seldom applied f or most efficient water use, ir rigate in the early morning less wind and lower temperatures mean more o f the water gets to the ru n /o n e instead ol being lost to evaporation Other practices that w ill conserve water are Don't plant on mounds or hills (a raised soil level with a rounded topi because water won’t penetrate well into the mounds, which then will dry out quickly A Hat planting bed is better lor taking in and retaining moisture In the cool, early pari o l the growing season, use a plastic mulch around to m a to e s , cu cu m b ers, melons, peppers and other warm season plants Plastic w ill warm the soil in addition to conserving water loiter in the season use an organic mulch such as straw or grass to save water and keep down weeds Keep weeds under control W eeds take m o isture fro m vegetables plants Keeping weeds out o f the home landscape is a matter o f effectively employing a variety o f control mctluKis iik lulling weed prevention, cro p m anagem ent techniques, cultivation and herbicides O f the control options available, the safest lor vegetable gardens is cultivation, the most effective for lawns is crop management, the easiest lor ornamental shrub beds is herbicides and the method that holds the greatest promise for the overall landscape is weed prevention In the vegetable garden, cultivate shallowly and regularly to scrape out young weeds and starve the peren dial weeds by continual removal of their tops Deep cultivation is un necessary, and in fact may actually spread perennial weeds by chopping their roots and spreading the pieces Lawn weed control efforts arc assisted with herbicides, but the best method of control is to manage the grass crop so that it grows more densely Proper fertilizer along with adequate watering during the sum mer season w ill help to keep many o f the annual weeds to a minumum in lawns In woody ornamental beds there arc a number ol herbicides that can effectively control weeds Diclohcml is a granular product that should be applied immediately before irriga tarn to control most annual and perennial weeds In situations where a mixture of herbaceous and woody ornamental plants prevent the use o f diclobcnil. glyphosate can be used as a spot ap lnation cither by painting it onto ic weed or by spray ing carefully . .Tw o new herbicides.
