Out-of-work Gourmet employees allege
unfair treatment by Lamb-Weston
H rp p n rr
(H e r 100 former employees o f

federal labor representatives
February 2
Thos who attended the meeting
told labor officials they felt they
were treated unfairly when I amb
Weston began rehiring former
(iourmet Brands employees to stall
the Boardrnan plant in mid January
I he former employees said they
were not given an adequate explana
tion why they were not rehired and
are w illing to fight the company to
get their jobs back
M urry Mac N e ill, senior in
vestigator for the Bureau of l-ahor

Tony Kodrigue/ of the Tqu.il

union organizer with the Cmtcd
Food and Commercial Workers
union were invited to the meeting to
inform the group of their rights
under state and ledrral laws barring
discrimination
A representative from la m b
Weston was also invited but declin
ed to attend
The group said they were sent un
signed, undated form letters stating
that after reviewing their work
histories and qualifications. I amh
Weston was unable to otter them
employment
Dave Kelly, a spokesman lor
l-aiilb W eston said in a phone inter
view from his Portland office that
everyone is evaluated individually
and that information contained in
personnel files on work histories and
qualifications is among the’ informu
lion used in the tiles
Kelly denied allegations that
Iaimh Weston discriminated against
the former employees lor any reason

injuries, or grievances tiled against

Kelly continued that he knew of no
pattern or policy that would be used
to exclude someone from cmplov
merit at I-units Weston He also said
he knew nothing about a torni letter
sent to those not rehired
Kelly said the same hiring prac

company s tive other processing

Ihe former employees complain

Some members o f the group ac

Another main concern of the
group was that future job searches
would be frustrated because they
were not rehired when 1-amb
Weston purchased the company and
that they had been labeled
' undesirables " A sign posted at the
employment office said, in part, that
applicants must have no undesirable
work history at (iourmet Brands or
la m b Weston
Tarnera Brooks told the group she
had hern in contact with Joe
Ruse bed. personnel manager at the
plant She told him the group's con
cerns that they wree rxx treated fairly
during the hiring procevs Brooks
said he expressed concern to her
about any statement that they were
"undesirable" and that he had no
knowledge of a form teller being vent
to the applicants Brooks said she
was told all decisions were based on
attendance and work related infor
mat ion contained in personnel files
After listening to the group's con
ccms Rodriguez and Mac Neill said
they did nor know if the former
employees had a legal complaint, but
would talk to them individually to
determine if they had a basis for a
complaint
Ihe two men stressed to the group
that they were nor their advocates or
representatives, that their agencies
are neutral parties
