('*•/ Mustangs lose early lead for 62-55 defeat H> A shies Conklin Heppner* hoy» basket hall team was red h<>t in the first half of its game with the Sherman Count) Huskies last Saturda) night hut the Huskies extinguished the Mustang flame in the second halt as Heppner concluded its pre season with a 62 55 loss and a 3-4 record For the game the Mustangs shot a season high 32 percent from the floor, nuking 22 of 42 attempts hut were a siz/ling 11 of Id in the first half for 3ft percent Heppner led 32-30at inlernussion behind 15 points from Wayne Wilgers who was 5 of 6 from the field and 5 of b from the line However the Mustangs were outscorcd 32-23 in the second half as Wilgers had only two more points as Heppner went 11 of 23 from the field for only 48 percent fhe two teams traded baskets in the first period as both teams settled for a 13-13 tie as Wilgers had seven points for the Mustangs Wilgers and Heppner continued dead eye markmanship in the second quarter to take a 32 .30 halftime lead Wilgers scored seven in the quarter and his two free thn>ws with one sc cond left gave the Mustangs the lead after they had trailed 2b 20 at one point In the third frame it was Sherman County's turn to shoot lights out as (he quick guard tandem of Gary Futon and Tracy Fields shot the Huskies within 42 41 entering the final period Wilgers had two points in the period and was shutout the re mainder of the game to finish with 17 points as sophomores Dick IJevin and Bryan Padberg kept Heppner in the game With 4 34 to go, Sherman Coun ty's talented h' 3 " center Hill Mar tin fouled out after scoring 15 points as the game was nip and luck However it was the Huskies that rose up to the challenge, outscoring the Fillies JY roll past At Vic's Mustangs 2 I H .uul t.tkuu- the g.uiH 62-55 Padberg and Devin also were in double figures with 12 and 11 punts respectively, a career high for Devin Wilgers had a season high five assists Fields led three Huskies in double figures wtih 17 points followed hy Martin with I ' and I alon who p>p ped in 10 the Mustangs will open league play this weekend bv hosting Kiser side on Friday at 7 30 p m and Stanfield on S.ilurdav al approx mutely b I ' p m Friday night Heppner will be try ing to avenge an earlier SS loss suffered to the Pirates in the cham pionship game of the Morrow Coun ty Invitational Tournament in December lust luesdav night Riverside got a strong game from John klennert inside to bury Stanfield M 48 who were without the serv ices of b' h'y " junior center lonv Brown fhe Mustangs also must stop the guard trio of Mike Ammons. Heppner is now I 2 on the season Cumn and Brin, the catalysts o f die Fillies inside game, scored 13 and 11 p>mts respectively while Heppner outscorcd the Huskies I S I 3 in die second half Fillies opened up a 10-7 lead Each team had its problems offen sivelv in the second period, scoring only a combined sesen punts, as Heppner led 13-11 at the break Die Fillies maintained their lead during die third quarter by taking die quarter H 5 and increasing their leac to 21 16 Heppner. which made 9 of 20 free throws in the game for 45 percent, hit only 4 of 9 free throw» in the fourth period hut tv was enough to come out on top 31-26 Only two other Fillies broke into the scoring column besides Cumn and Brut during the contest while Melinda Miller topped the Huskies with nine punt» Heppner will try and extend its winning streak to two games Salur dav afternoon when it hosts the Stan field Tigers at I p m « t a mm % Duane Ball looks for the steal against the Huskies lone girls beat Mt.
