Ih c ma jonty ot voters that have rejected the school budget (fiv e lim es) are not uncaring, selfish, or vindictive For the most part they are sincere, hard working folks that arc being asked to support more jn d m ore on less and less ( hir agriculture, cattle, jnd lumber concerns jr e struggling with rising overheads, dropping prices and w orld surpluses Our mill em ployees have taken a significant pay cut W orkers at the coal fired plant have taken a three year pay freeze and cut in fringe benefits ( hir cattle ranchers receive no fringe benefits or overtim e yet they are squeezed tighter and tighter with ris mg overheads but no increase in cat tic prices Many local businesses arc cutting em ployees and inventories and some are closing Nationwide our economy is in trouble Our na turn is bankrupt with a rising national debt which our children will he strapped with because we do not have the fortitude to cut hack and ac ccpt a lifestyle our nation can afford. Our schools arc in trouble because they arc attempting to maintain a style and pay raises out o f harmony with the rest o f the county W e need a spirit o l understanding and good will toward the plight ot the lav payers I f money were the solution for out schools (2 6 0 billion (9 ‘■Holy Giild S i n c e r e C h r is tm a s th o u g h ts to all. a l o n g u'tth o u r th a n k s /or g o u t c o n t t n u r d g otx l la ith was spent in IVH.Si then we would be the most literate, educated pco pie on the earth Instead the com- petanev ot graduating seniors con tmucs to decline (since I1* * * the scar they took prayer out o f the public school) Our national literacy is a disgrace with quotes o f up to 70 nullum Amcrisuns with reading defi cicncics W e need a change in priorities in the directum ot our sch ool' if » c are going to bring reconciliation and harmony to our county Some steps that would restore confidence and quality to our whools arc I ) Restore discipline in stead o f do your own thing and responsibility instead o f rights 2) Restore the paddle back into the hands o f the classroom teacher and or the principal 3) Return old fashioned honoring o f G od, tamily and country instead ot honoring kids rights, pre marital sc\. gay rights, communism, abortion and me first 4 ) Return to teaching and practicing right and wrong (its in that banned b o o k , the B ib le ) instead o f everything is relative and everything is right as long as you don't get caught 5) Return to teaching values, morals, skills, as well as reading aikl writing instead ot seeing educaiton as molding and therapy b) Return to sounding out words instead ot m odem look say m ethodology so our kids can read when they finish 12 years o f school 7) Return to teaching God created the heavens and earth as well as the m odem theory o f evolution W e d o not all believe that our forefathers were apes and w e evolved from a murky pool W e need to see some signs the ad ministration has an understanding and empathy for the plight and con cerns o f the public Alter fiv e no votes it is time to make some changes and seek reconciliation and understanding with the voters I believe they truly care about our schools and our teachers and most ot all our kids In regards to a proposed split county medical district Nothing could undermine the econom ic viability and social well being ol this county more than a split over m e d ic a l c a re T h e p re c e d en t established would continue to erode the social. educational, financial, and governmental foundations until the original mistake was repudiated Any community could in like man ncr separate whenever the educa tional. medical, governmental or soclal programs were not to th-ir lik ing Irrigon could send th> »id s to I 'niotilia (it is closer than Hoard man) lone could pull out to save their school Heppner could pull out to fence o il their mountains it e fire wood. elk. deer, fish, etc t Irotn all outsiders It is already happening with pay hunting" W here would it all end ‘ Again, what we need is a spirit ol good will, uiklcrstanding and recon ciliatnm The record strongly sug gests the iik'dical needs o l the north end o l the county have not been ad quatcly met fhey need and deserve understanding and resultant changes I appeal to the citizens o f the North end l)o you want equitable and commendable medical care and sup port or do you want a split medical county ’ You have a legitimate com plaint and deserve to have your needs met Please work within the system Don't break it down to reach sour own ends Ihe precedent you care Could one cone tenuously desiring quality medical care for their community dens it to another ’ T o divide the county ov e r medical financing would no doubt cause the Pioneer M em orial Hospital to close causing real financial and medical hardship upon the citizens o f the south end In like manner it the North end has been denied equitable medical care then let us employ the county officials to admit it. rectify it and reconcile this break with our brethren I et us allow a spirit o f g o d w ill and understanding and uni ty to prevail In co n clu sio n , e s p e c ia lly at Christina» time vso h ive a w onder ful opjxvrtumty to allow G o d 's gilt to mankind.
