Him children in the Morrow County schools. we would like lo express our feelings about the present firun cut situation of the district and the attitudes that seem prevalent at this time In the 8*^ years that our family has lived in Hoardman. we have been very supportive and pleased with the quality ot teachers, schools. and princ ipals with which wc have come in contact Wc feel like our children have been exposed to a first rate school system Wc never felt that we were paying too much for the schools and have always supported the budget Compared to other districts wc have been in. the tax amount paid to supjxrt the schools seemed scry low lor the quality ot education which our children were receiving For the past year and a half wc hasc become more and more disap pointed with the attitude ot the voting public in parts ol this district It „p pears to us that some people no longer care about the quality ol education which our young people obtain as long as it is cheap and doesn't raise taxes' Although the cost of lis ing increases steadily. they Icel that the cost ol education should remain the same as it was IS sears ago Nothing worth has ing costs the sjme now as it did I' years ago' W o think a good education is worth has ing Obviously, many people don't agree with us because, no nutter how much is cut from the school district budget, they won't vote to pass it We real ire that the economy is in a slump hut we Icel that the budget committee nude every effort to cut any “ unnecessary" items before the last election After cutting a total ot S7A<),0t8> from the budget, and putting por lions of it before the voters five times, the school budget still has not passed People have written letters to the editor, appeared at school board meetings, talked to anyone who will listen and still, some refuse to believe that wc need to pass the budget so that our children may get the quality of education that they deserve Now. the budget commit lee has come up w ith some final cuts which they have termed "non mandated" items in our budget Wc would like to suggest that these cuts are absolutely wrong In order to make everyone realize the seriousness of this situation, cuts need to be made that will affect the majority of the voting adults, not the majority of the children in school By cutting lour counselors at all levels, wc are hurting the students who need help the most There would be no crisis or guidance counseling, less career counseling, no help with scholarship applications (which is the only way some students will he able to attend college), and no one to "be there" for troubled kids whose parents aren't around, don't care, or arc loo buss Gutting counselors would not affect the soling adults until it is too late for some of these kids By cutting six librarians, we are destroying the education The v an he measured bs the quality of its library Without a librarian, the librars would he of little use to the students as the teachers and principal certainls would not hacc the time to order new materials, shelve hooks, work with computers. teach research techniques or all of the other nuns things that a librarian docs Bs cutting 12 3 aides, we arc put ting 4M 2 ' hours per week of work and duties bac k on the teachers who alrcads work more than the required eight hout'per das They would not have the time that they need to prepare lor classes because they would he doing recess duties, runn ing oil thousands of papers, correc ting transferring records, filing, recording scores, small gri>up in struction. and jll of the many other things that aides do so well The t»4 tom line is the teachers would he burned out and the children would again suiter Some teachers would choose not to work in this district under these conditions and wc would he hard put to hire quality replacements with our "tentative" budget situation The voting adults would not he touched We do not understand why the decision was made to cut only the elementary art and music specialists and litX the P I specialist Ifcutnng specialists was decided upon as a was to dec reuse costs, then is should be an acr os s the hoard, non selective cut Actually, we don't want to see cuts nude in these areas at all. if possible It it comes down to nuking drastic cuts in order to get the uncaring public to pass the budget, then we feel the cuts should he made where thes will he- tell bs the adults as well as the children W c suggest that the big three items on the "non- mandated" list arc where the cuts he made, d necessary co-curriculare activities (athletics, field!rip*, out door school, extended duty con tracts. annual extra duty con tracts! $1(8).*208 Eood services program $10.'.732 and transportation Slf>7.8S4 This totals S >72.4**4. somewhat more than the S VsbJ 8 8 1 needed in order to run the schixils us they are until the end of the scar Gutting these items would be noticed bs the public voters' Wc don't think n o many adults want to sec the sports programs go. haul their children to and from school, or take the lood out ol «he mouths of some children who depend on the lunch they get us their num meal of the us Mas be lac mg these cuts, the voters would sus I really do care die les s is neccssars in order to give these students the kind ot education which I was fortunate enough to get and which they deserve
