Dana and l-ana found themselves on opposing sides o f the ball Missy Turner. Dana Reid, and lauia Reid excelled in high school basketball like tew others have and their team climbed to the top o f the mountain where few other teams have been larva Reid, a three year starter, and Turner and Dana Retd, two-year starters, were the building hltxkv of the foundation that was laid for a Claw " A ” state championship for the Heppner Fillies With the arrival of Mike Royer as the girls basketball coach at Hepp ner in I^K t the cast was set A ll Hut was needed was the cast to come o f age and produce During the 1^84 85 season Royer look the Fillies to their first Colum bia Basin Conference and a third place finish in the Class " A " state tournament la s t season Royer led Heppner to another district championship on its way to the first state championship in any sport at Heppner High School When the show was over Turner and the Reids took their acts on the road When the road came to an end. basketballs found their way into the hands o f Turner at Mt H in d Com munity College in Gresham and the Reids at Blue Mountain Communi ty College in Pendleton Saturday was the first game of the season for the Saints and Timber wolves and although none of the high school stars started, each made significant contributions to their teams efforts Turner, playing the point guard position and running the fast break that Filly fans remember her for. had probably the best showing of the night among the three Playing 2.1 o f the games 40 minutes. Turner hit 2 o f 7 field goals and I o f 1 free throws for 1 points But the rest o f Turner's numbers read d rebounds, b assists. 2 steals, and only 3 turnovers Dana Reid saw I I minutes of ac tion but had some fine moments at point guard lor BMCC luna Real saw 10 minutes o f play mg time, but came on strong during the last seven minutes in the second half to finish with b points on 3 o f b shooting from the field and b rebounds The Saints won the game 5 7 4 0 behind a full court man to nun press that was employed the entire game for Mt Hood Turner was at her best from the 13:55-8 30 lime slot o f the second half Turner sparked the Saint fast break o ff the press to ignite Ml Hood to blow open a close game in the second half Meanwhile the Reids received limited playing time alter just com pleting a busy volleyball season with a win over Columbia Basin College in Pasco last Wednesday The Reids, and nearly all o f the rest o f the Timherwolves, had less than a week o f practice under their bells due to the volleyball season The game drew mixed reviews from the former leanuiutes and their ex coach “ It was really sad to play against Dana and I .ana after play ing w ith them since junior high and winning a state championship together."
