To the F ditor t he National Tuberous Sclerosis Assoclation i N I SA» is a non profit organization dedicated to prov iding educational information and support to victims of Tuberous Sclerosis and th e ir fa m ilie s and fu rth e rin g research Tuberous Sclerosis is a genetic disease characterized by tumors, seizures, and skin lesions Mental retardation may or may not be pre sent Tuberous Sc lerosis affects both male and female, and is found among people o f all ethnic groups It may be diagnosed a lew months alter birth, or may not become ap parent until many years later Once the disease appears in a fam ily, the chance o f additional members being affected is very high, therefore, ear Is diagnosis, treatment and genetic counseling are extremely important A parent support group meets in the Metropolitan Portland area one or two times a year in order to pro v ide much needed emotional support and to exc hange im pirtant informa lion In addition, any family that needs emotional supp>rt mas c a ll contact persons.
