As a crop, it presents no pniblcms for fanners rhe benefits o f this crop are that it can be seeded and harsested iust like wheal It yields a little lower than wheat (about HIT ) and bushel weights jrc lighter (about 48 lbs). There is no established market for triticale. however, and that is its chief disadv antage It is a good feed, with good protein content It has been testcxl very widely on poultry with good results But as a feed grain, it must compete with com. barley, soy meal, and any other teed a feeder can buy And com is sell tng for 580 ton these days W ith a yield potential for triticale of a ton per acre, that's a poor return for farmers The alternatives to these two corps arc planting a green manure crop or planting nothing and watching the soil wash away Perhaps the best solution is to form a grower's group, one large enough to guarantee enough triticale at a competitive price that a large feed lot would be interested A
