I n o r ilmlK.n H tm nlr S u a th h r David und April Sykes, Publishers Editorial In the middle of where? Quick, name one issue for which Neil Goldschmidt, democratic candidate for governor, stands for in the state of Oregon. It's only a little over two months until an election that could determine the direction o f Oregon politics for years to come, and many people, especially those east of the Cascades, can only tell you that. "Goldschm idt thinks Eastern Oregon is now here." It's true, Goldschmidt did say he thought Bend was "the mid die o f nowhere,” and this past week he was down in that city apologizing profusely and trying to dislodge the "size I 1 Nike' he had so throughly lodged between his teeth But is this what this election is to he- remembered for ’ Goldschmidt's remark? There is no doubt that the ex Portland mayor, and Carter ad ministration transportation secretary made a terrible gallc with his remark about Bend. For although some may surmise that the "now here" remark was just a slam against Eastern Oregon, it was in fact a slight against any small town in Oregon By Oregon standards Bend is not ready a small town, and is in fact a dynamic and grow mg area o f the slate. Consider the population of Bend In |dX4 it had just over IH.UOO people By comparison Coos Bay. has justs over 14.not). Hermiston WHO; Ashland 15,600; Grants Bass. 15.140. and so on. with many cities in Oregon smaller than the town from "nowhere " But is this what the I9H6 election w ill be remembered tor. Goldschmidt’ s misplaced remark ’ I hope not I here are much more serious problems facing Oregon than Goldschmidt's con desending attitudes toward Eastern Oregon, and small towns in general We need a governor who can do something about improving the export possibilities of our agriculture commodities Who can do something about holding the cost of state government down, who can do something about getting the lumber industry back on its feet In general, a governor who can do something to maintain and improve the quality o f life for <)regonians And that means all Oregonians, those that live in Portland, and those that also live " in the middle o f nowhere " David Sykes, publisher Community Calendar Adult education class times change Ulne M ountain C om m unity C ol lege Adult Itasi».
