D C at Georgetown University from June 17-21 There we had intense classes on the language, culture, and daily life We attended a reception in our honor at the Japanese Embassy and even had die chance to speak with the Am ha evador himself One day was spent on Captail H ill, visiting our Senators and setting in on congress (They were debating the new Ta» B ill ) Deana Nakata. the other scholar ship recipient from Oregon. 2nd I did not get a chance to speak with Packwood because he was debating “ on the floor " We did thinigh. get a personal inters lew with Hatificld And whoever from the Oregon Wheat League who called my name in Hatfield's office and whom I never got to see you scared me out o f my socks It's a «null world isn't n ' On Saturday. June 2 1. we flew to New York and took the 14 hour flight (non stop) to Tokyo There is I6 hour time difference between Japan and Oregon, so we just about skipped a day The following morning we had breakfast (American style) at the U S Embassy We were given an uplifting speech by Ambassador Mansfield on (he importance o f our friendship with Japan From there we visited the Diet (Japan's Parli menu hut it was not in session due to the upcoming double election We also visited their Supreme Court and Department o f Education Tuesday morning we were all up bright and early to hid our farewells to our newly made friends and go our separate ways I took a one hour plane flight North to Akita, a beautiful city o f 300,000 on the Sea o f Japan nestled up against the mountains I was met at the airport by my host mother (My Okasani and my host sister. Yuko Afler lunch I went to my new high school. Seirei (Holy Ghost) It is a private, all girls Catholic school My class had known I was com ing and I was greeted with cheers and giggles At first I thought I'd flubbed my line “ konichiwa." hut I realized later that they only giggle because they arc shy I am now a full time student and w ill he until July 20-summer vacu non I go to different English classes and help students with tJieir pronun ciation During other classes I work on my Japanese either alone or with the help o f one o f the English teachers Monday I had the opportunity to visit the Mayor o f Akita. Keiji Takada and lo give him the letter of friendship from our Mayor Cara Costa Tuesday I visited Gov Kikuji Sasaki and gave him a similar letter from Gov Vic Atiych And yester day I had t)ie opportunity to visit a public high school They only have three grades Freshman, Junior. Senior Though it is coed, hoys and girls are in separate classes After sch«x)l. like Seisci H S . they go to dubs or sports (Kendo, Judo, wrest! ing. pingpong. basketball, baseball, volleyball, etc I At Seirei I have joined the basketball club I must say they 're really good and I 'll have to give it my all to match them (Good practice!)
