13 The Swedish Lutheran Valby
Congregation actually was being
formed in 1885 hut was form ally
begun on A pril 19. 1886 when 17 of
Ihe Swedish Lutheran settlers of the
Goo-eharry area of lone, met with
Dr E rik Noreliu* in the John
Johnson home and organized, with
John Peterson assisting Dr Noreliu*
as secretars The church wa* acce
pled into the Augustan Synod

south of Coos Hay. and its main

Rev Wornell has been in the
m inistry for 19 years, and has
partored churches in both Oregon
and Washington In 1976 he took a
leave of absence from the pastorate
to attend his church's seminary in
Springfield Missouri, and then an
additional two years of graduate
work in history and education at the
L’niversity of Oregon

coming to Heppner. he was associ­
ate pastor and m inister of education
at New Life Center in Springfield.

The American Cancer Society's
Cancer Crusade began Tuesday.

leers w ill he going door to-door to
collect tax deductible donations for
the society and to hand out materials
to let people know what services are
available through the cancer soci
ety
Since the crusade has not been
conducted locally for several years,
many people may not know that
beds are available for cancer pa
bent* through Ihe Society, other
equipment and support groups are
also available, said a local spokes
person for Ihe crusade The com
mumty can receive more if they only
apply to the Society They have not
turned down a request, and there
always seems to be equipment or
support available if it it requested
The Society is also trying to locate
a local storage area for euuipmenl
Funds are used for research,
patient care, and to inform people
about the Cancer Society
