Some mem bers of the varsity
team w ill be playing some junior
varsity, while some J V t w ill be
playing some varsity

what to work a lot on defense and
new plays The varsity also scrim
mages quite a bit in addition to the
drills
The varsity Killies finished the
1985 season with an 18-4 record
"O ur record m ay not be as impres
sive as last year's because our
p re -le a g u e schedule is m uch
tougher.'' said Coach Koycr. "but
that competiton w ill help us once
league play begins "
The varsity has a lot of strong
points for them this year but also
some weak points
"W e have six players with not only
varisty experience, but district and
stale experience as w ell They know
what it takes to get the job done,
they've been there before." co m •
men ted Coach Koyer
"And that
experience is very v aluab le." he
added
The Killies are a running team and
Coach Koyer's main concern is that
they take care of the hall and lim it
the turnovers
"O ur guards have to be disciplined
in knowing when and when not to
make a pass," said Koyer
Coach Payne feels that the weak
points of the junior varsity team will
be inexpenene
"W e w ill be almost entirely fresh
man and sophomores," said Payne
Coach Royer has set some goals
for the Killies this year He plans to
lake one gam e at a tim e and to
improve as a team as they go
"M y long term goal is to get into
the d is tric t to u rn a m e n t," said
Royer
For the JV team , Payne feels that,
"idealistically all coaches and a th
letes should sit a goal to win every
game, bul realistically I would like
to win one fourth of our games My
p rim ary goal is to have the team
drilled in the fundam ental and our
offenses and defenses as they are
ready for varsity next y e a r." he
added
A lot is expected of the team from
the varsity coach this year “ These
girls have experienced a lot of
success in athletics and I will expect
them to continue to work hard and to
improve as individual basketball
players and as a te a m ," commented
Coach Royer "W e cannot become
complacent as a team We must
continue to set goals and work hard
to reach them "
This sum m er several of the v a r
sity m em bers played in sum mer
league basketball program at Herm

One tea m the F illie s p la y e d
against was the Hernuston Bulldogs
llerm iston was split into two equal
teams at the tim e
Heppner s first gam e of the season
is against the Bulldogs Herm islon
w ill be one learn then and w ill be
much tougher competition for the
Fillies
"Anything can happen in the first
g am e." said Royer " It w ill c e rta in
ly be a big test for us "
For the JVs, Payne thinks that to
win against a triple " A " JV team .
they'U have to play an exceptional
game to win "A ll we can do is give
it our best shot and be happy with
the results." concluded Payne
