Chris svkev Collin Anderson 14 Morrow County teachers atte nd health conference By J \NF D l \\ June 914. fourteen teachers from Morrow County attended the Seaside IX Health Promotion Conference The conference is sponsored by the Oregon Department of Education The Health committee chose the theme "E xpose Yourself to Well ness" for this year's conference Around 800 educators attended this conference Most of the atten dees were from the state of Oregon, but a few educators cam e from Alaska. Maine. Michigan. Virginia and New Mexico Most of these teams were attending to gain infor mation on how to organize a health conference ITi ttiiii' stati j Guest h«*alth speakers and presen ters were brought in from across the nation to help make this conference a super experience for those atten ding The participants attended ses sions and workshops on wellness for life • from pre school to nursing home aged The presenters taught good nutrition, e x e rc ise s . CPR, First Aide. How Students Learn, Safety. Stress. Burnout Drug and Alcohol. Humor and Happiness Sui cldc. Sexual Abuse, IHmiestic Vio lence. Aging Process. Selfesteem . Heart, Foot and back problems and snacks workshop Dutch Savage a former profes sional wrestler, was there to pro mote his drug abuse program in the Oregon Schools Slim Good body T \ health personality a rm e d in his t>ody suit and did a presentation on how educators can turn students on to taking care of their body Many of the presenters autographed their textbooks which were sold at the conference This conference started the day with a 6 a m exercise session Either a swim, walk jog on the beach or aerobics After breakfast the day was spent m workshops The programs ended by 10 p m There was tight scheiluling which kept all participants very involved So mans good workshops were offered There was no way. one person could attend all of these The Morrow County team split in different directions to try to cover most subjects offered The teachers attending were Terry McElligott from Columbia Junior High Betty Kietmann and laiura Broderick Plans to garden and golf A/tarylee Hiemstra After 19 years as the secretary at lone Schools, Marylee Hiemstra is retiring, at the same time her husband Ed. who is retiring his teaching position at Heppner High School Prior to moving to Heppner to accept positions with the school d istrict, the cou p le considered Nampa. Idaho, their hometown Hiemstra says that after adjusting to retirement, she plans to spend her time gardening and golfing and adds that her husband says they will watch their grandkids plav basket hall She says that she enjoys her years of working at lone schools and will miss it In recent years, past graduates of lone High School have stopped by just to visit and to introduce their children to her She began as secretary the same year Harold Boggs became the principal at lone He moved on aft«-r four years, hut she had four other principals also Dennis Brandon two years. John Edmundson three years, and Chuck Starr nine years C ham ber of C om m erce to organize at Boardman By near unanimous vote, the Boardman Commercial Club last week decided to change its orgam ration to a Chamber of Commerce The change will broaden the club's membership base, and its scope of activities, club chairman Art Kegler ■aid Boardman real estate broker John Pragg has donated use of office ■pace at Mountain Valley l.and Co for the Chamber and says a phone line will be installt-d there soon for Chamber business from Inn«1 Doug Sheribon.
