Letters to the Editor
Concerned about emergency speeding
exceeded the speed lim it at a high
rale One such incidence happened
last summer when la-xinglon cele
brated the county centennial, a
police car drove through town at a
high rate of speed The town was
tilled with residents young and old
enjoying games ami activities
In contrast ambulances with
patient* in a lift- and death situation
only exceed Ihe speed lim it by III
miles in accordance with Ihe law
We are asking all law official* to
please slow down and drive care
fully before a tragedy k ill* or injure*
one of our children or resident*

Kaslern Oregon on the afternoon of
May 29
I was on duly for Ihe (Tty of
Heppner when the call came in I
checked with the Morrow County
Sheriff's dispatcher and was told of
the situation and that tny assistance
w as needed
All units in Ihe area were being
pressed into service

afternoon of May 29. Chief Hathhun
came on duly and Officer Hmghaiu
was at his residence on standby
alert Thus, the City of Heppner was
not left unprotected It no one had
been able to take over. I would not
have left Ihe clly
I believe this quick response trom
all police agencies was crrtainly
instrumental in the apprehension
and capture of those involved

The authorities wiere re­
sponding to the hank robbery in
lone

an emergency vehicle can exceed
the designated speed lim it *o long as
he does not endanger persons or
property
At the lime of this incident Ihe
road was not ideal road conditions a*
it was slick from a recent rainfall
during the day
(a-xington i* a small town with lots
of traffic especially heavy semi
trucks carrying wood chips, lumber,
log*, wheal, petroleum products and
other carrying heavy freight
At any lim e these trucks travel
through town at the posted s|>ecd of
:» miles per hour

busies meet at different locations in
town with children walking and
riding bicycle* to and from these
busses
If ihe (tank robbery had
happened just one hour later these
children would have been getting off

custody
I listened on the police
radio in our office at City Hall while
Sherill Drago efficiently directed
the chase His voice was marked
with strain
Another person who did a tirsi rate
job is Hila Hill who was dispatching
from the Courthouse

given a feeling of support to the
officer* in their car* in the country
