Oregon-(California l>oundary disputed
To the editor
To attribute the current "Oregon
California Border W ar" to an early
"surveyor's error” is an affront to
the very talented and respected
surveyors who established the boun
dary in 1867
In truth, those
surveyors met the specifications and
tolerances of their highly compli
cated task i which even then w as to
settle a conflict as to the state
boundary! under very adverse con
ditions
Discrepancies in their
placements of monuments along
what they observed to be on the 42nd
Parallel of latitude were due only to
limitations of even the best equip
merit manufacturer! al the tune
They had no quartz crystal watches
nor radios to receive precise time
signals from Denver, and their
measuring instruments were merely
prototypes of the excellent instru
ments we have today
So it was
technical limitations, not error or
lack of skill, that caused insigmfi
cant displacements of their monu
ments
I say insignificant' la-cause any
possible displacement of their mon
unients. which remain undisturbed
and can la- properly identified today,
is a matter of law, the physical
monument controls the legal loca
lion of the taiundary and the written
description of the Uiundary is secon
dary
Such was the law then,
centuries la-fore, and yet today
It is irking that by use of the term
"surveyor's error" the reporters
and or their informers have repeat
ed the careless mistake used in
similar and la-casional news releax
es concerning various boundary dis
putrs Such use exposes ignorance
on the part of the reporters or their
informers and derogates the public
linage of surveyors and the survey
ing profession
The current rabble regarding the
( iregon California border location is
no more than political chaff, which I
hope will soon blow away without
undeserved public expense
But
there is a truly adventurous story in
the history of its survey
I-et me refer those persons who
have even cursory interest in the
matter and especially reporters in
need to fa- informed, to the (Iregon
Historical Quarterly dated March.
1*71, Vol I.X X II No I The feature
article, written by Eranns S lain
drum, describes the sciences and
techniques of the early border sur
vey The article also gives source
references and bibliography to aid
with serious research
Writers of
continuing future news articles re
garding the border would do well to
absorb that history
Yours truly,

Researcher says link between
diet and cancer
Several organizations have now
concluded that scientific data on the
relationship between diet and can
cer are strong enough to warrant the
development of dietary guidelines to
lower cancer risk according to Dr
T Colin, CamptM-ll. Senior Science
Advisor in a recent news release
from the American Institute for
Cancer Research
To date, the available data "stron
gly suggest that a diet enriched in
plant products reduces cancer risk,"
•uud Dr Campbell, a cancer resear
chef and professor of nutritional
biochemistry at Cornell t'mversity
Cancer risk, he said, "increases
with high intake of dietary fat and
protein, and low intakes of food rich
in vitamin C vitamin A (as beta
carotene', vitamin
and dietary
fifier "
Dr Campbell's status report on
diet, nutrition and cancer summa
rized the studies that have been
undertaken since the first major
conference on the subject was held
in I»75 One of the most exhaustive
of the studies completed by the C S
National Academy of Sciences in
1*82. found enough of a link to
"formulate interim dietary guide
lines that are both consistent with
good nutritional practices and likely
to reduce the risk of cancer," said
Dr Campbell, who served on the
NAS committee responsible for the
report
E
Hr said that of those guidelines,
"the two that will have the most
likely impart on consumers in the
marketplace were the recommend*
lions 1 1 to reduce dietary fat intake
from the current level of 40 percent
45 percent to 30 percent of total
caloric intake and 2i to emphasize
the importance of including fruits,
vegetables and whole grain cereal
products in the daily dirt "
Among the research activities
currently tieing funded by the Amrr
lean Institute for Cancer Research
for which Dr Campbell serves as
Senior Science Advisor and other
organizations are studies on vita
mins A, C, and K and the trace
mineral selenium on various popula
lion groups a survey of hypotheses
on the relationships between life
style factors and cancer incidence
and a study of the effect of multiple
dietary risk factors on selected
cancers in the People s Republic of
China
Al this point. Dr Campbell said,
there appears to I k - consistent evi
donee within various studies indica
ting a positive relationship between
nutrition and cancer
It is hoped
that within the coming decade,
conclusive data "will enable the
American public to make the appro
priate modifications in their dietary
practices with confidence to reduce
cancer risk.” he added
