The Heppner Gaiette Timet. Heppner. Oregon. Thursday, kngusl M. Around About By Justine ITeatherford In two day* September arrives and we hope its entrance doean't mean the ending of summer weather which was to slow to reach Morrow County Thu year 's August hat whizxed by more quickly than any month 1 recall For me a variety of activities made the time fly estra fast-first the great week at the Ashland plays, then a moat delightful weekend at Sun River which was followed by helping with preparations for our county fair, then the fair itaelf and the Saturday parade and weekend rodeo Sunday. Aug 1». Helen Cumn and I drove north and west across Washington State We enjoyed a repeat look through Chateau Ste Michelle, the largest winery in Washington, as we moved on to Yakima for a one-night visit in Karla Weatherford Weaver's home Tuesday we two Morrow County grandmothers traveled to Tacoma and Port Orchard via Snoqualmte Pass, Snoqualmie Falls and Monroe and Snohomish. Washington Helen spent three nights in suburban Tacoma with her suter in law Manan Knotts, and 1 spent three nights with my older son Koss Haberlach and hu family at Port Orchard Last Friday we decided to take the White Pass through the lovely wooded area north of Mt Hamer to gel back to Yakima When we stopped to buy some sack lunch goodies in a super elegant, very large store at Enumclaw. we chatted with another shopper who urged us to take a side trip off Highway 410 up to Sunrise Park near the 7.U00 foot level on Mt Hamer So we lunched in the fine picnic area near timberline after viewing the very educational exhibits in the Visitors Center We were glad we has sweaters to warm us at that high elevation as we watched the clouds drift across the face of the mountain, alternately revealing and obscuring its peak Our drive down from Sunrise along the Naches River was over quickly, then we spent another night at the Weaver'home before coming on to our homes on Saturday carrying along a box of Yakima peaches and a box of Hermiston tomatoes I'd been thinking this could be a fairly quiet week at home with some time to reorganize my house, to try to improve my garden and yard and to write letters to family and friends, but I was unexpectedly invited to go to the ( iregon State Fair on Tuesday and Wednesday and that suited me fine So Jane Kawlins and I took off quite early on August 28 I had already confirmed plans to attend the Gilliam County Fair next weekend Saturday. Sept 8. where Marion and la-ona Weatherford are being honored as Grand Marshals Now I shall soon be able to write a quick comparison of four 1984 fairs-L'matilla s. Morrow's, the State's and Gilliam's Not all of my friends agree with my philosophy "Go when you can” , however, last Sunday morning when I was watching CBS T V ’s ' Sunday Morning ' I was delighted to see and hear that terrific Black American entertainer Ben Vereen saying We re not supposed to sleep through life, but to live through life." It is so thrilling for me to be watching young folks developing particularly the ten w ho call me "Grandma " Now I am (flighted to know that my oldest granddaughter Anita Haberlach, just 14. has been an outstanding soccer player since the fifth grade and is now playing in a 18-year-old league in the Auburn-Federal W ay Seattle area She will go with her team to Canada next week to play near Vancouver She expects to be on the team at Thomas Jefferson High School at Federal Way this year Anita is a goalkeeper Although I've thoroughly loved every minute of my travels around Oregon and Washington this summer. I'm always glad that I have a home in Heppner waiting for my return, where I have caring, thoughtful and helpful friends and neighbors Within this year this column has changed from a weekly item to a once a month schedule However I have made exceptions like the weeks I told you of my big trip to New Zealand. Australia and French Polynesia I am planning another exception next week when I expect to give my thoughts about the four fairs I've attended and a few paragraphs about coming fall activities Lexington News By Delpha Jones WW-tilHV e e e e e e e eeee eeee eeeee eeee eeeee eee eeee e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e »« ##!
