Beaver ton, Oregon, 970U5 The phone number is • 503 ■ iAf> 49H4 Thank you. <s - Molly King Gilpin Pditor Publications Problems of a “ credit community To the editor Until about Hi years ago I had never written a letter to the editor Now I've become nearly as prolific as John Maas About 10 years ago I wrote con crrning problems facing merchants in a "credit" community such as Heppner After that letter appeared in the Heppner Gazette several of the Heppner business people told me they wished their names had been signed to the letter along with mine At the risk of being redundant, I want to share some of those proh lems again Credit given to our customer* is a courtesy and a privilege It keeps you from having to carry cash or a check hook with you at all times But if you do not pay that account when you receive your statement the next month you are putting us in the same position you would be in if a portion of your pay check was withheld, through no fault of yours and without your consent I'm sure nearly every merchant in town is willing to consent to an extended period of time for regular monthly payments when a purchase is necessary and if arrangements have been made to do that Hut we can carry only a limited number of those accounts because of what happens to the value of the dollar as we wait for It The U S Dept of Commerce has released the following statistics showing how an account devalues with age If your account is paid when due the following month after purchase, each dollar paid is worth fl If an uccount is not paid the month following purchase, or cur rent month, it goes into the 30 day column If not paid that month it goes into the 60 day column By then each dollar is worth only t Mi to us because of inflation and our costs of carrying the account If not paid until it is in the 1H 0 day 16 month i column that dollar is worth only 67 cents If we wait I year it is worth 45 cents If we wait 2 years it is worth 23 rents If we wait 3 years it is worth 15cents If we wait 5 year* it is worth I cent We aren't saying we don t want that devalued dollar you might owe us We just don t want it to devalue even more We are grateful for any payment on an account I'lease reciprocate the courtesy of the merchant and rxtend to all the merchants the courtesy of prompt payment The alternative may someday tie losing the privilege of a credit" community If that hap pens every thing you buy would have to tie paid for at the time of purchase (S) Aloha DeSpain Heppner Auto Parts. July 16. 1959 The School Board was taking steps to determine and clear the owner ship of the school at Boardman. because no record of the school district purchasing the land from the Bureau of land management could l>e found If the district could not prove ownership, the concern was that the Corps of Kngineer* might not help rebuild the school after the old one was flooded from the back waters of John Day Dam Bids were being asked for the proposed museum library building which was being donated to the city by Amanda Duvall as a memorial to her late husband The city of Heppner was experien cing a water shortage caused by the blowup of a transformer at the Columbia Basin Klectrie Co-op sub station at Heppner which caused a power milage and force the shut down of pumps at both city wells M Year* \go Thursday. Idaho is planning a big project to celebrate thu living tradi lion There will be a Cowboy Poetry Gathering next winter in Klko.
