Shirley McNary has been painting "two or three after noons a week" at her studio on Main Street in lone for about a year now. She and her family came to the Gooseberry area in 1969 where her husband farms. Her studio was at their home until they moved into town and did not have the space for her kiln and easel. She does china painting, oil painting, and has recently begun painting with water colors. "Anybody can paint," she says, "if they want to spend time and effort." She says that she always wanted to draw and couldn't so she decided to learn to paint; then when a neighbor came with a painting, she decided that she could do it, too. McNary has studied with several other artists. She began china painting with a class taught by Mary Nikan der of Heppner. Other skills she has learned in her studies with Merlin Enabit, Serge Bongart, Robert Walton, Wil liam Reese. She used to attend classes every other September at Ellensburg, Washington, where the pro gram required three days of study with one teacher and another three days with a different teacher. She also has shelves covered with books from which she says she sometimes learns by looking at the finished work of other artists, and sometimes by reading theories and de scriptions of their techniques. McNary describes her own styles as "a striving to be loose and impressionistic." She says it is not important to be a great pencil sketcher because it is easier and more interesting to move the paint around. She enjoys both her china painting and oil painting and sometimes thinks she would be "better at one if I could give up the other, but I can't give up either," Using water colors she says is similar to china painting because light colors are used first with darker colors added later. She reflects that it is probably easier to correct an oil paint ing that isn't quite the way she wants it to look by either scraping off the paint, of "building a bonfire." "It's good to keep a few paintings, though to see how you are progressing." McNary used to take her work to artist's shows, in the Tri-Cities, Columbia Center, and the July Sidewalk show in Richland, but no longer shows much of her work beyond Morrow County Fair. Her surroundings are not that important, she says as long as they're not too depres sing. Good light which doesn't glare is neccessary as well as ventillation, because the oil paints and thinner can be dangerous. Her equipment, she says is "mostly inspira tion and time," This spring, golf lessons, her square danc ing and two grandchildren have taked part of her time. If she hasn't painted for a while, she says that ideas and inspiration come slowly, "but once she gets started, she has more ideas than she can fin ish. Describing her china paint ing, she says"the most fun is designing it and deciding what, where, and how," then she does all the work free hand. The china painting is somewhat slower than other forms because it requires a first painting to sketch then baking in the kiln, a second painting for detail and third painting for finishing and bak ing in the kiln between each.
