AAory Goheen (R) presents check Soroptimist International of Heppner has recently com pleted a four-month project in which the club raised $763 for E.V. Blevins of Ukiah. Mrs. Vlevins. a diabetic, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Gonty of Heppner. The Soroptimists estab lished a fund at Western Fede ral Savings and Loan Assoc. in Heppner with $270 from an unexpended service activities fund. A total of $55 in dona tions from private citizens were made, another $263 was raised from afghan ticket sales, and $172.97 was earned during a popcorn ball and caramel apple sale during the Moonlight Sale in October. Harriet Evans of Heppner was the winner of the afghan. Club President Mary Go heen presented Mrs. Blevins with a check last Friday. First Christian plans special presentation Mr. and Mrs. Tio Kelley from the Christian Children's Ranch in Eagle. Idaho will be making a presentation on November 13th at the First Christian Church in Heppner, announced the Rev. Don Shel ton. pastor. The Children's Ranch is part of the Boise Christian Homes. Inc. which has been ministering to the needs of children since 1946. But many parents are not waiting for the law to buy the devices, the division reports. The Automobile Club of Oregon says it has been selling units like hot -cakes for the last year, and business has picked up in recent weeks. Telephone inquiries also are up. Several child restraint loan programs operated by county health departments also re port increased calls about loaner devices. The Motor Vehicles Division began in mid-October a pro gram to acquaint drivers and vehicle owners with the new law. It is ending pamphlets explaining the law to people renewing car or driver licen ses n.M V nlso adopted fede ral child restraint standards. Among other things, the pamphlets remind would-be buyers thast a child restraint system must meet federal motor vehicle safety stan dards and that any device manufactured since January, 1981. will have a tag stating that it meets the standard. The pamphlet also points out that the law covers people other than parents. Children under li've must be in safety belts or child restraints when riding in most passenger vehicles. Safety officials say children over five and, for that matter, all adults Also should ride with safety belts fastened to reduce possible serious in-iurv. After that, however, citations may be Issued for "endangering a child passen ger" with a fine up to $20.
