There are a good many grangers that are unable to get out to the meet ings due to distance, transpor Obituaries Leta M. PORTLAND - Leta M. Thomas of Portland, formerly of Heppner. died Tuesday, Nov. 1, 1983. in Milwaukie. She was 90. Funeral services were held Saturday. Nov. 5. at the chapel of Wilhelm Funeral Home in Portland with pastor Mal comb L. Hazel, Jr. of Concord Christian Church officiating. Vault interment was at Fir lawn Cemetery in Hillsboro. Mrs. Thomas was born in Woodburn to Thomas J. and Elizabeth Rood Humphrey, who moved to Heppner in 1899. She graduated from Hep pner High School in its first four year class, in 1911. She was a graduate of North Paci fic College in Portland and worked as a pharmacist in Eugene. Santa Barbara and Long Beach hospitals. She joined her father in 1932 in operating Humphrey's Phar macy in Heppner, which he established in 1904, continuing Samuel A. HEPPNER - Samuel A. "Gus" Steers. 70. of Heppner, died Tuesday. Nov. 1. 1983, in Walla Walla. Wash, at St. Mary Community Hospital. He lived in Heppner most of his life. He was born April 7, 1913, in Hardman. to Richard H. and Pearl McDaniel Steers. He was an Army veteran of World War II. On October 2. 1943. he mar ried Ruby Blaney in Clinton, Ark. Funeral services were held Sue Waid PORTLAND - Burial ser vices for Mrs. Vernon Waid (Sue) will be held Thursday, Nov. 10. at 2 p.m., in Echo. Mrs. Waid, Portland, died Garden Bugs By DELPHA JONES The Lexington Garden Bugs met at the home of Leila Palmer on Thursday for a regular meeting. Elsie Huston gave a most informative talk on the care and propagation of African violets. This popular little flower came from the country of African and grows profusely there. The City Park was dis cussed and it was announced that the sprinkler system has been installed, and work has ceased for the winter months. In the spring, there will be planting of specimen roses along the fence as well as trees and shrubs. Anyone wishing to donate one of these is most welcome to do so. Also anyone wishing to give a tree or shrub as a memorial is welcome to. and a small tag will be placed on the speci- 7 EDITOR the coverage tation or illness and this is their only way of knowing the happenings of the grange. Thomas to operate the business after his death. She sold the busi ness and retired in 1967. living in Willamette View Manor inportland. A charter member of Hep pner Soroptimist Club. Mrs. Thomas was still interested in basiness of the club and a contributing member to many club activities. She was a prominent member of Hep pner Christian Church during her years of living here, and a member of Concord Christian Church when she died. Survivors are a stepdaugh ter. Betty Gardner. Burbank. Concluding services and vault interment were at Heppner Masonic Cemetery. Survivors include his wife. Ruby Steers, his sister, Grace Buschke, and his brother, Elmer Steers, all of Heppner. Michael J. Christenson. 21. of Boardman, was arrested by Boardman Police for alleged Fourth De gree Assault. He posted bail and was released. On November 3. Laura May Powers. 33. of Boardman, was arrested by Boardman Police for allegedly Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants. She was released on her own recognizance. On November 4, Jim Flowers. 50, of Portland, was arrested for allegedly Driving Under the Influence of Intoxi cants and was cited for having No Operator's License. He posted bail and was released. On November 6. a Board man ambulance transported a male from a Boardman resi dence to Good Shepherd Hos pital in Hermiston. On November 7, a Board man ambulance responded to a motor vehicle accident one half mile west of Boardman 00 Interstate 84. One male and one female were transported to Good Shepherd Community Hospital. The accident was handled by the Oregon State Police. Hermiston. The meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. Heppner man pledged to OSU faternity Patrick E. Clark of Heppner was pledged to Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity during the fall formal rush period at Oregon State University. Food sale slated to benefit wheelchair fund By NEOLA MACKEY Ladies who attend the Thursday craft and social times at the Heppner Neigh , borhood Center will be spon soring a baked food sale Saturday. Nov. 12. at 9 a.m front of Central Market on in in Heppner. The money raised from the sale will be used to buy a wheelchair with adjust able foot rests to be loaned out to the community by the center. Ladies of the Thursday social group are asked to bring sack lunches to the sessions and help get ready for the December 3 Artifactory. Local woman honored on 85th birthday By JUSTINE WEATHERFORD In 1898 at Davidson, in southwestern Morrow County, the lives of Lewis and Ella Davidson were brightened by the arrival of a daughter, Delia, who became Mrs. Har lan McCurdy, Sr. She has spent most of her 85 years in Morrow some on the family ranch, some in lone and now lives on Church Street in Heppner. On Sunday. Nov. 6, her granddaughter, Karen McCurdy Dubuque, and hus band Doug, arranged a cele bration in Delia's honor which included a family dinner and much visiting and picture snapping. Those present in- eluded Karen's parents, Don na and Harlan McCurdy Jr. who have recently returned to the county. Karen's older sis ter. Dianne (Mrs. Bruce Moy er. who came from Lolo, Mont, and their younger sis ter. Janet (Mrs. John Currin), and three sons: Brian, Casey and Joel from Pilot Rock. Delia's cousin. Tempe Rhodes and her husband Al from Ukiah also joined the group. Delia's daughter.
