Gootuross ia growing prowem A distant relative of wheat it gaining attention aa a problem for Columbia Basin grain gro wers, according to an Oregon State University scientist. "Cheatgrass, wild oats and annual ryegrass tuuhe a lol more damage, Rut we have chemical controls for them. Goatgrass Is now our number one unsolved weed problem, and It is a growing concern," said Don Hydrych. an agronomist at OSU'a Columbia Basin Agricultural Research Center at Pendleton who is get ting $111,000 this year from the Oregon Wheat Commission to study the weed. "A post emergence herbicide works on cheatgrass. Hut goat grass is so similar to wheat the chemicals that kill it kill wheat, too." said the researcher, ex plaining why the goatgrass problem is hard to solve. Goat grass is so genetically similar to wheat that on rare occasions it crosses with the grain in Oregon fields, producing a sterile, hybrid plant, he noted. Contamination and competition is how goatgrass inflicts eco nomic damage. "If there's too much in wheat the grower can be docked up to 20 cents a bushel by buyers at the grain terminal." said Rydrych. Also, it is "almost impossible" to separate goatgrass kernels from wheat kernels so w heat seed can be certified as pure, he said. In the field, goatgrass com petes with wheat for moisture and nutrients, the researcher said. Economic damage figures are not available, Rydrych said. "But our estimate now is that we have, In spot infestations, probably I00.0OO acres in this area " he said, explaining that if goatgrass is In a field or along the edge, the entire field is consi dered infested. Goatgrass is spread by com bines moving from field to field, residue blowing from grain trucks, farmers planting contam inated wheat seed and. possibly, j trucks transrting wheat straw to be used as livestock bedding, the researcher .Raid. Without selective chemical controls, farmers must combat the weed with cultural practices such as isolating it in fields or along their edges, killing wheat and goatgrass in the isolated area, and leaving the area fallow for three years - an expensive procedure Rydrych is testing how various rhemicals affect the weed in wheat plots he plants each season at the Pendleton research sta tion. He purposely contaminates the plots with goatgrass.
