she added. Along the feme
line there are numerous beau
tiful roses - offering a spec
trum of color. There are va
rious shrubs planted around
the base of the house, but now
the eye is attracted to a
generous planting of petunias,
geraniums and bright red
salvia. Upon close scrutiny,
one can find a tomato plant or

around the home serves as a
carpet for the generous dis

tips on spring
Tulips may be planted dif
ferently. Hulbs may be plan
ted at it depth of into 12 inches
if:
the gardener wanls the
bulbs to flower well for a
greater number of years;
if hotrytis blight Is a
problem :
If mice are prevalent; or
- if annuals and glads are
to be planted In the same
space.
If bulbs are planted at this
depth, be certain the soil is
good and that it Is well
drained
Mice love tulips. If rodents
are a problem, wire baskets
may lie placed around the
bulbs lo help prevent damage
to them There is a bulb called
Grown Imperial that is sup
posed to help repel rodents

bulbs
which blooms In May, Check
with your dealer for advice.
Most bulbs multiply rapidly
until they become overcrow
ded, usually In six to seven
yeras. Tulips, however, are
different. Some may bloom a
long time and others decline
rapidly each year,
After blooming, cut off any
seed pod and allow the greens
to completely die before re
moving them from the bulb,
When the leaves become limp,
they may be braided or knot
ted together and tucked un
derneath annuals that are
starting to grow. After the
leaves are completely dead,
they may be removed from
the bed, or the bulbs may be
dug and stored in a cool, dark
and dry place
