SIX-The Heppner Gaiette-Tline. Heppner, Oregon. Thursday, September 22, 19S3 Mustangs By MELISSA PRIVETT The score remained the same as the Heppner Mus tangs battled the Weston-Mc-Ewen Tiger Scotts last Thurs day night in Heppner, yet the score would soon change leav ing the Mustangs with a 64 victory. Mark Way threw a pass in the second quarter that was received by tightend Greg Orr who was awaiting the ball in the end zone. This gave the Mustangs the lead that they needed. "They were tough (Weston McEwen). Defensively we played well, especially after the first quarter." stated Hep pner Coach Craig Hitching. "They were running all over us, but our defensive line stiffened up, and that chang ed." This was partly due to the mistakes made in the first quarter when assistant coach Les Paine made some person nel adjustments. "After that we played a very acceptable defensive ball game. We did n't allow first downs, yardage, rushing, or passing." Kitching commented. "Offensively the team did pretty much what they had to do to win the game," but their coach felt that there was a breakdown in the offensive line which allowed the Weston McEwen defense to penetrate the line. This threw Heppner off. "They were well coached and played a hard hitting ball game." said Kitching of Wes-ton-McEwens' players. "We expected them to come out and attack us and they did, but by the fourth quarter they were dragging. By the end of the third quarter they were ready to go back home," Kitching replied. "We take pride in our condition. We're in as good or better shape than any team we ply. but we have to be." Kitching did expect some thing from the team. "I ex pected the team to be nervous, to make a few silly mental mistakes, to play better, and by that I mean to execute their assignments, and to have a better offense." At this time the defensive line is ahead of their offensive line, but the coach said that this is normal because it is so early in the season and that the team will be working more on the offensive line this week. "Winning this game showed them that their hard work paid off. They know that they have a lot of work ahead of them. We've got to improve every week." added Kitching. The improvement will be needed when the Mustangs face Sherman County there at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Kitching said. "We scouted Sherman County last Friday. They try to run the ball and will attack us offensively and defensively. They don't do any fancy things, but they have big kids that run a lot. They beat Riverside, and they beat us, so we're in for a good ball game." According to their coach, the team needs to concentrate on capitalizing on scoring op portunities after the ball is within the 10-yard line. "In stead of relaxing we need to go over the top and put the scores on the board," concluded Kit ching. KiiuuaCorp. Bucknum's C.B.E.C. Ray Boyce Ins. 4-4 4-4 3-5 3-5 Splits: Floss Watkins 6-7-10. September 17 and placed second. The tournament consists of four teams: the Lyle Cougars, Columbia Christian Knights, Dufer Rangers and the Hep pner Fillies. The first game was played by the Lyle Cougars and the Dufer Rangers. Dufer won the game and was ready to play the winner of the next game. The next game was played by Columbia Christian Knights and the Heppner Fil lies. Both matches were close but with excellent serves the Heppner Fillies won the lirst match, 15 12. The second match against Columbia was another tough one. The super teamwork and great serves helped make the match and game go to the Fillies with a score of 15-5. "The girls played really well, showing a lot of improve ment. Everyone was great. Their serves were in and their spikes were in," said Heppner Coach Barbara Stefani. The third game was played by the Cougars and the Colum bia Christian Knights. Colum bia Christian won the game, putting them in third and the Cougars in fourth place. The last game for the cham pionship was played by the Rangers and the Fillies. The first match was a tough one but the Fillies showed the Rangers how the game was played. The Fillies had excel lent team work and super serves. They hustled for every ball, but showed it was worth it. They won the first match with a score of 15 to 6. The second match was close but not quite enough of Heppner's serves were over the net. They did keep up their excellent team work though. The match was won by the Rangers. The score was 15-8. The third match decided the game and championship. It was won by the Rangers. Although the Rangers won the championship the Fillies really played an excellent game. The whole team really was hustling and ready for anything that came to them.
