Fashions for Women
Architectural styling with
Oriental influences create a
sense of casual sophistication
in women's fall fashions. The
major new look is railed
"casual crops." The silhouette
is a V-shape, flowing wide and
loose on top to slim below the
waist. Paramount to the
shape-up are dolman sleeves,
cropped tops and slim cropped
pants. The most important
fashion detailing is asymme
trical collar treatments and
closures. Mandarin collars
are also featured. Short
jacketed suits are favored.
Jumpers have been revived in
softly fitted styles
Sweater dressing is as popu
lar as ever. Subtle changes in
keeping with the architectural
mood update the classic ap
proach. Geometeric patterns
persist. Sweater sets give
layered looks new vitality.
The newest sweater trends are
long or short, often in novelty
knits Features include broad
ened shoulderlines. high or
low necklines, waist high or
thigh low lengths. The effect is
trim and figure conscious on
one hand and loosely fitted
casual on the other. Pairing is
much in evidence, such as a
slouchy tunic vest over a
matching cardigan.
Cropped pants are designed
to show off textured hosiery
and ankle boots. Generally,
pants are softly tailored and
slim, in lengths just above the
ankle to mid-calf. An excep
tion to narrow-legged pants is
Oriental samurai pants which
are widely flared. Part of the
'5(s influence is seen in Mari
lyn Monroe or Norma Jean
pants. These are tighter fit
ting, stop at the ankle and
often have slits or zippers.
Black denim cropped jeans
emerge as a fashion state
ment. Twills, gabardines,
corduroys, brushed fabrics
and haberdashery looks offer
plenty of variety for dressing
up or down,
The color spectrum favors
deep, dark shades of navy,

plus midtone browns. Vibrant
colors include mustard,

with vibrant colors. Gray goes
it alone or is used to give
winter pastels a gray cast
creating a soft Shetland ap

coral, lavender, blue and

jewel -like tones.
With fabric selections more
versatile than ever, consu

broad grouping of natural and

fects Forecast for Menswear
Color and texture are the
newsmakers in men's fash
ions, A conservative styling
approach enhances the effect
of mixing materials and tex
tures in the same colors. The
trend in all fabrics is toward
darker, deeper tones with
touches of bright color. Over
dyeing is used to intensify
shades. Black, white and gray
are the leaders, with black
frequently used as a ground or
contrast Use of black is a
mainstay in shirts and swea
ters. Bottom weights feature
more brushed surfaces in cot
tons and blends of synthetic
and natural fibers. Textured
polyester fabrics look like
worsteds. Some are blended
with wool. Donegal tweeds,
herringbones and windowpane
plaids are pattern choices in
dress pants. Double pleats are
basic. Triple pleats, side waist
tabs and extended bands are
new.
