OSU researcher reports effects of volcanic dust Oregon has felt the atmos pheric effects of the giant dust cloud still circling the globe from the March-April 1982 eruptions of the volcano El Chichon in Mexico, an Oregon State University atmospheric scientist reports. C.R. Nagara ja Rao. director of the Solar Energy Meteoro logical Research and Training Program and the university, says atmospheric transparen cy decreased by about 14 percent on bright days and the amount of direct solar radia tion reaching the ground at Corvallis was reduced by ap proximately 28 percent during late November and December of 1982 when the stratospheric dust cloud was in residence over the mid-latitudes. The ash and. more impor tantly, the sulphur dioxide gas from the Mexican volcano went higher into the atmos phere than those from the eruptions of Mount St. Helens in 1980, explained Rao. Most of the St. Helens ash and dust were quickly washed from the atmosphere or settled to the ground from their own weight. But the El Chichon eruptions reached the stratosphere, the Livestock weigh-in to be held Friday A 4-H and FFA livestock weigh-in for market Iambs and hogs will be held Friday, June 24. from 8 a.m. to 12 noon at the fairgrounds in Heppner. It has stayed there, circling the globe and reach ing mid-latitude locations, such as Oregon, after a period of several months. Furthermore, the dust cloud, composed mainly of sulphuric acid particulates resulting from the chemical conversion of sulphur dioxide, is expected to remain relative ly intact for several years, according to Rao. It has been estimated that, as of the end of 1982, the amount of sulphuric acid remaining in the stratosphere was nearly 40 times what was deposited by Mount St. Helens in 1980. William A.
