Da id and April Hilton Sykf, Publuhcr Obituaries Victor Groshens Sr. HEPPNER - Victor Gro shens. Sr.. 75. of Heppner. died Sunday. June 12. 1983. at Pioneer Memorial Hospital. He was born July 30. 1907 in Heppner. the son of Victor E. and Annie Erickson Groshens. On April 9. 1937. he was married to Virginia E. Rakes at Vancouver, Wash. They returned to Heppner in 1946, where for 23 years he was the city water superintendent. Mr. Groshens was a dedi cated sportsman, who loved to hunt and fish. He was a member of the Heppner Elks Lodge and the Over-60-Under-80 Bowling League. Ritualistic graveside ser vices were conducted by offi cers of Heppner B.P.O.E. No. Elizabeth L SALEM - Elizabeth I. John son, a former Heppner resi dent of Salem, died Monday, May 30. 1983, at the age of 87. She was born in Heppner on February 8. 1896, one of 16 children of Franklin Dee and Elizabeth I Hayman Cox, of Upper Hinton Creek. She lived at the home place until she was 19. Part of her education was achieved in the school room in the upstairs of the Cox home, known as the F.D. Cox School District. She married James J. John son on August S, 1915, in Oregon City. They lived for a time in Scotts Mills and for many years in Silverton be fore moving to Salem in 1945. Mrs. Johnson was a mem ber of the First Christian Church of Salem. Zetta J. HEPPNER Zetta J. Johnson. 69, of Heppner, died Tuesday. June 14. 1983, at Pioneer Memorial Hospital. She was born April 16, 1914 in Hardman, the daughter of Hiram and Hattie E. Ball Johnson. Graveside services will be held Friday. June 17, 2 pjn., at the Lexington Cemetery with the Rev. Stuart Dick officiating. Scholarships Denny Starr and Craig Gu tierrez received many scholarships and awards dur ing lone High School's com mencement exercises June 4. Starr was named an Oregon Scholar, an award given only to the top five percent of graduating seniors in Oregon, as well as the Valedictorian award. He also took first place, a $600 award, in the Elks Most Valuable Student Scholarship, presented by Dave Barnett. In addition, he was presented a $750 Carl Troedson Grant by County Judge Don McElligott. Gutierrez received the sal utatorian award, a $750 Carl Troedson Grant, the Eastern Oregon State College Presi dential Merit Scholarship - a 5 Wards alone cannot your cards, letters, thoughts and prayers have meant to us. Johnson Funeral services were held at the Church Street Christian Church in Salem with the Rev. Bob Mulkey officiating. Inter ment was at Belcrest Memor ial Gardens Mausoleum. She was proceeded in death by a daughter, Pauline Vear rier. and two grandsons. Survivors include her hus band James, age 92 and a daughter. Frances Weathers, of Salem: sons Nels Johnson of Stayton and James of Sa lem: 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one brother. Dee Cox. Jr. of Hep pner; sisters Wilda Beer of Salem. Alice Wasserman of Baker and Esther Meerkatx of Boise. Idaho. Howell Edwards-Doerksen Mortuary was in charge of arrangements. Johnson Survivors include her hus band. Ernest Allen, Heppner; sisters Goldie Barrett of Klamath Falls. Lillie Tygart, Prineville. Loy Stewart of Talent and Lucille Brown of Medford: and brothers Earl Johnson and Gene Johnson, both of Klamath Falls. Sweeney Mortuary, Hep pner. is in charge of arrange ments. awarded full tuition award, and placed second in the Elks Most Valu able Student Scholarship Con test, for which he received a $300 award from Dave Bar nett. . Roger Childers received a Blue Mountain Community College Full Tuition Scholar ship, and Tim Patton won a $300 Cardinal Club Scholar ship and a $750 Carl Troedson Grant. Special presentations were also made to both graduates. Don Taylor received the Warren Williams Memorial Vocational Scholarship of $100, and a $750 Carl Troedson Grant from Judge McElligott. The Flossie Marick Memor ial Scholarship of $120 was presented to Darla Anglin. sav how much all Vickie and Leon Magill June U, 983 Marriage The Morrow County clerk's office at the Morrow County Courthouse in Heppner has accepted Marriage License applications from : Francis Paul Van Marter, 24, and Abbi Louise Wilson Camargo, 29, both of Heppner; and Brian Paul Rietmann, 23. and Sharon Lynn Crowall, 18, both of lone. Sheriffs Report The Morrow County Sher iff's Department at the Mor row County Courthouse in Heppner handled the following calls, cases and reports during the past week: On June 7. Harry Duane Steers, of Irrigon, was invol ved in a motorcycle accident on Highway 207. No other vehicles were involved. He was transported to Pioneer Memorial Hospital by ambu lance, and was cited for al leged Careless Driving. Also on June 7, the Board man Fire Department re sponded to a fire behind Ready Mix Sand and Gravel on Rippee Road in Boardman. Rescue I vehicle also respon ded. Damage was unknown. In a third June 7 incident, the Boardman Fire Depart ment responded to a grass fire off Paul Smith Road at Rt. 1, Box 46. Rescue I vehicle also responded. On June 8, John Childers reported to the Boardman Police Department that a re frigerator and drapes had been taken from a rental trailer at Wilson Road Trailer Park. Value of the items is unknown. Also on June 8. the Morrow County Sheriffs Department, the Morrow County Search and Rescue Posse, the Board man Fire Department and the Boardman Police Department responded to a report from OHie Thomason of Boardman, who said her five-year-old daughter. Barbie, was lost near Tatone Pond, located seven miles west of Board man. The girl disappeared with her golden retriever and failed to return. The incident was reported at 9:15 p.m. Union Pacific Railroad was advised of the missing girl and slowed their trains down as they passed through the area. U.P. crews also helped look for the girl. She was found at about 4 a.m., three miles west of where she disappeared. Her grandfather. Chuck Thoma son. of Boardman. found her alive and well. About 30 people helped in the search. (See related story.) On June 9. at 10:50 a.m., the sheriff's office received word that the lone branch of the Bank of Eastern Oregon had been robbed. The suspect, a white male about 30 with dark brown or black hair, about 5 ft. I.U.C.C. intern to be welcomed June 19 The lone United Church of Christ will welcome a summer intern and his wife on Sun day. June 19. Tom and Sachi Fujita are arriving from Berkeley. Calif., where Tom is a seminary student at Pacific School of Religion to spend the summer in lone and Condon, the Rev. Cathy Barker reports. To welcome Tom and Sachi, and to honor fathers on Fathers' Day. the Worship Committee has planned a breakfast from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Members of various groups in the church will provide a menu of sweet rolls, sausage, fresh fruit, coffee and tea. Was seen northbound on Bombing Range Road towards Inter state 84 between 11 a.m. and 12 noon. Suspect was armed with a large caliber revolver with a blue steel barrel approximate ly four to six inches long. (See related story). On June 11. a Morrow Coun ty sheriff's deputy arrested Clayton Jerry Newton, 20, of Hermiston for allegedly Driv ing under the Influence of Intoxicants. He was lodged at the Umatilla County Jail and later released on his own recognizance. On June 12, Janalee Bridges. 22. of Corvallis, was arrested by a Heppner Police officer who was assisted by a sheriffs deputy for alleged Disorderly Conduct. Also on June 12, a Board man ambulance responded to Lincoln Square Apartments In Boardman for a female hav ing possible heart problems. She was transported to Con solidated Good Shepherd Hos pital in Hermiston. In a third June 12 incident, Elmer Holtz. lone, reported to the Sheriffs Department that his apartment house in lone had been broken into. In yet another June 12 re port. Edward Montaya, 24, of Irrigon. was arrested by a sheriffs deputy for alleged Second and Third Degree Criminal Mischief. Also ar rested was Thomas Gomez Pena. 26. of Hermiston on charges of alleged menacing. Both were lodged at the Uma- tilla County Jail. Also on June 12, the Board man Police Department took a report from Michael S. Allison of Boardman. He said a 1977 Ford pickup has been stolen from the Hitchin' Post in Boardman. As of Monday afternoon, the vehicle had not yet been recovered. On June 13. Mary Elizabeth Kidder. 29. of Umatilla, was arrested by a sheriffs deputy for allegedly Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants, Attempting to Elude a Police officer and having No Opera tor's License. June 4. at 8 a m. the Makers and Bakers 411 Club made breakfast at Chloe Pearson's house. We made a fruit salad with a peach, some strawberries, bananas, apples and oranges. We also had some rolls with butter, cinnamon and sugar. To drink we had chocolate milk. Everyone thought it was delicious. Our next meeting will be on Wednesday.
