The Pirates prevailed over Heppner 3-1 and 14-13 as the Mustangs slumped to a 2-5 season's record. Only the first game of the twinbill was a league counter. Combined with Heppner's league-opening 8-6 loss to Echo at Echo Tuesday, April 5. the Mustangs stood at 0-2 in league games. In the opener against River side, the Pirates' Harold Leighton bested Heppner's Jim McConnell in a pitcher's duel. Riverside used four hits in the first inning to push across a pair of runs and added a single run in the sixth to hold a 3- 0 lead going into the seventh inning. But the Mustangs came to life when McConnell broke up Leighton's no-hitter with a leadoff single in the seventh. Stan Sporseen and Mark Way then walked to load the bases with no outs. Geanup hitter Jay Hayes sent a Leigh ton pitch to the rightfield wall, only to be picked off at the fence by Riverside's Rich Gil bertson. Had Gilbertson not made the catch, Hayes would likely have had a grand slam home run and the Mustangs 4- 3 lead. Instead, it went in the books as a sacrifice fly and two groundouts later, the Pi rates had the win. McConnell scattered eipht hits, walked no batters, and was backed up with an error less defense in the game. In the second game, Hep pner erupted for 10 runs in the third inning for a 13-4 lead, "but poor defense and numer ous walks allowed the host Pirates tos come back and steal the win," said Coach Brent Eggers. Heppner had taken a 3-0 lead in the first inning when Hayes singled in Sporseen. and Chuck Coffman's two-run double scored Mark Way and Hayes. Riverside came back with four runs in the second inning on four walks and four errors to take a brief lead. But Heppner roared back with its 10-run inning in the third to take a commanding lead of its own. Mark Way doubled to lead off the inning and after two flyouts. the Mustangs began a tremendous rally. Travis Hyatt. McConnell and Hayes all had singles in the rally and Bruce Way put a grand slam homer over the left field wall to cap the scoring. Three errors, one walk and one hit by -pitch contributed to the big inning. However, Riverside utilized numerous hits and walks to score five runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 14-13 advantage. Heppner stranded two base runners in the sixth and final inning when its last two bat ters struck out to end a final scoring threat. Hyatt took the loss in relief of starter Mark Way, while Jeff Orr came on to pitch the final inning in impressive fashion, striking out the side after an opening walk. Hayes had two hits and two RBI's in the game. "McConnell pitched a great game and we played excellent defense in that first game," said Eggers. "Unfortunately, when we pitch and play de fense well, we hit poorly, and vice versa. We need to gain some consistency and find a second pitcher." After seven games, Hayes is leading the team with a .333 batting average and two homeruns. followed by Mark. Way (.313). McConnell (.280). Hyatt (.273) and Coffman (.263). McConnell leads the pitching corps with a 3.18 earned run average. lone tennis team suffers 1st loss By CRAIG GUTIERREZ The lone tennis team suf fered its first loss of the season to the Echo Cougars, 4-2.
