Thr Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner. Oregon. Thursday. March 31. : 983 THREE Around About' By Justine Weather ford This lust day of March happens to fall on Maundy Thursday , or Holy Thursday, which is always just three days before Easter Sunday. It commemorates two events of Christ's last week on earth: washing the feet of His disciples, and sharing the Last Supper with them. The name Maundy probably comes from the Latin Mand.itum, or command ment. It refers to Christ's words (John 13: 34) "A new commandment I give unto you that ye love one another." Traditional rituals practiced for centuries on this day have been dropped In most places, Mart in Luther and his followers condemned the practice of washing feet by the clergy which was a ceremony intended as a visible token of Christian brotherly love. Some churches hold Tenebrae (darkness) services on Holy Thursday. Tomorrow is Good Friday, the day dedicated to the remembrance of the crucifixion. Services in lleppner will be conducted by the Ministerial Association, at the New Life Center Church at 7:30 p.m. In many places the churches hold services from noon until three o'clock, recalling the hours of Christ's agony and reviewing the words He spoke from the cross. The most solemn week of the Christian year, Holy Week, the last week of Lent, ends on Easter Sunday, the most Important holy day of the Christian religion. Its name may have come from Eostre, a Teutonic goddess of spring, or from the Teutonic festival of spring called Eostur. Easter Is one of the movable feasts of the Christian religion with its date varying from year to year because of the moon. In 325 A D. the first Nicene Council decreed that Easter should be observed on the first Sunday following the full moon on or after the vernal equinox. Thus, pilgrims traveling to Jerusalem to celebrate the Resurrection were assured of a bright night sky, Easter can occur anywhere from March 22 to April 25. By now many of you have spent 10 hours, through four different nights, watching the TV miniseries "Thorn Birds." Based on Colleen McCullough's tremendous book telling of life, love and pain in Australia which was filmed mainly in California. This TV serial was rated by competent reviewers as the "top of the list." Last Thursday, thankfully not the worst day of last week, 98 flower-loving persons gathered in Willows Grange Hall at lone for a District Garden Club spring meeting. This was the second district meet during this school year to be held in Morrow County. These gatherings, along with the St. Patrick's Day celebration, the Pioneer Picnic, the Fair and Rodeo, the Artifactory and other people bringing affairs are good for the area . Some of those w ho come have never visited here before. Maybe now they will come again, and, at last tourism is being recognized all over the world as a really great economic factor. Last Saturday night the 19R3 Fair and Kodeo Queen Lottie L&ughlin was crowned by Charley Daly, chairman of the fair board Queen Lottie and Princesses Sylvia Ladd and Dawn Timms were honored by a large segment of the community and were presented with beautiful belt buckles by each of the three banks: Bank of Eastern Oregon. First Interstate Bank and Western Heritage Savings It was good to have Jim Ackley among us again and to hear him honor his long-time friend and co-musician Lottie with a song. Jim's band provided the music for the dance that night at ttie fairgrounds following the community potluck dinner. 1 If you haven't seen the court's attractive outfits you will surely admire the queen's white and the princesses' gray suits worn with lovely jade shirts. The five pennant bearers: Dyann Brosnan. Wendy Skillcorn, Bridget t Greenup. Bob bette Angell and Stacy Kennedy, look good in their grey pants and hats and flowered jade cotton shirts, too. This week of is seeing some big changes. Last Sunday in Boston the over 2(H) years-old blue laws which forbade retail stores from opening on Sundays ended, and many shoppers rushed to buy after they left Palm Sunday church services. Also we know that April 1, the first U S boost in the gasoline tax (user's fee) will take place and everyone will pay five cents a gallon more Last year on Faster Sunday several of us climbed up to the weatherbeaten cross on the hill east of town. That symbol which was erected many years ago really needs some repainting it has become more visible to more persons now that the Willow Creek Road has been relocated. It would be a great project for some civic-minded group to renew this marker before another Easter. Although the arrival of spring this year hasn't brought very many days so far that are just right for gardening and lawn mowing, perhaps Easter Sunday will begin the lovely, warm, pre-summer weather that everyone is so ready to have begin. TV show featuring dam to be shown Tuesday A video tape of the March 6 "Northwest Illustrated" show, featuring the Willow Creek Dam, will be shown at the Chamber of Commerce noon luncheon on Tuesday, April 6.
