The lone Cardinals pulled out a close win last Tuesday, Dec. 14, when they defeated the Heppner Mus tangs, 41 39. The win over Heppner was the first in many years and was one that was not predicted by many. Mustangs trounce By GI.ENN SMITH Saturday, Dec. 17, the Hep pner Mustangs trounced the Elgin Huskies in a home game that ended with a score of Heppner 64. Elgin 36. Coach Brent Eggers commented "The team played their best game of the season. We really executed. our half-court of fense and fast break well. We had an excellent first half defensively, although we fouled a little too much in the second." The Mustangs set the pace for the entire game dazzling the Huskies and controlling their scoring. It was late in the second quarter when the Huskies score hit double figures. By half time the Mus tangs led 39 - 13, pretty much putting the game out of reach for Elgin. "We played under control a lot better, doing a few new pre-game exercises on con centration that really helped a lot." Eggers said, "Mental mistakes that plagued us in previous games were pretty well eradicated." High scorer for Heppner was Jeff Orr with 16 points, stuffing the ball to increase the Mustangs' lead. The birds from lone set up a defense that closed the middle off to Heppner's middle men and got back on Defense after the pressure to stop Heppner's playing what Eggers said was "the best game of his career." High rebounder for the Mus tangs was Greg Connor with nine. All the Mustang players shined Saturday, each one working hard during the en tire game. When asked his opinion of the con trast between Heppner's per formance against lone and Elgin, Eggers commented "Like night and day. The lone game was a perfect example of Murphy's Law. We didn't have one player that played well in the lone game." Although two of the Elgin starters were missing from the game, Eggers felt that "It only would have made the score closer. We had a special defense ready for Elgin but we didn't even have to use it." In the coach's rating sys tem, Jeff Orr led the cagers with a 20. Jay Hayes and Greg Connor both had a 10. The game turned around in the second quarter as the Mustangs outscored the Car dinals 10-6 and tied the score at 21 points each. Heppner had a chance to take the lead as Mark Way was fouled and sent to the charity strip but came up unsuccessful. At half time, the fans and spectators could feel the ten sion as both teams took to the floor to warm-up. At the tip off. Heppner took it to the hoop for two but from then on were dominated by Ione's offense and held to a minimum by Ione's Defense as the Cardi- Elgin 64 - them this time. The 11 members in the class are: Steve Curtis, Gary Riley, Dan fortenberry, David Florea, Tom Hamman, Greg Orr, Missy Turner, Mary DeSpain,. Carla Miles, Leah Cooper and Sandra Wattenburger. They have been working for several weeks rehearsing, building sets, recording sounds, gathering props and costumes, and working out lighting plans. After a 60-second timeout, Meyers did what he set out to do and sank three straight free throws and tied the game at 39 with two seconds left on the clock. Due to the technical foul, lone got the ball back and did the impossible. Roger Morter inbounded the ball to Tim Patton. who took a turnaround jump shot from the top of the key with no time remaining to give the Cardinals a victory. It should lone Jr. High girls defeated by Heppner By ASHLEY CONKLIN Ione's junior high girls' bas ketball team met defeat as they were beaten 35 to 31 by the Heppner Ponies last Tues day. The Cardinals started the first period by taking a nine to six lead. Heppner rallied hv the second quarter, tripling Ione's point production 12 - 4, to lead at halftime 18 to 13. Both teams kept pace with each other in the third stanza, each scoring six points. The Ponies led with a 24 - 19 advantage. lone had 12 points compared to Heppner's 11, but it wasn't enough as the Ponies held on Cards beat Mustangs By GLENN SMITH Last Tuesday, Dec. 14, the Mustangs traveled to lone to play the Cardinal's varsity basketball team. Unfortu nately, the Mustangs were beaten by the Cards, 41 - 39. Brent Eggers, coach for the Mustangs, commented "We had the game on ice as bad as we played. In the first period, the red birds were flying high, build ing a 15 - 9 advantage. The second quarter was all de fense, as Ione's lead was 19 to 12. at halftime. Heppner came back in the second half, behind the shoot ing of Wayne Wilgers, who hit for 17 of his game high 25 points. The third quarter was most ly Heppner as the Ponies narrowed the margin to 23 - 22. The fourth period was close, as Heppner put 14 points on the scoreboard, to 13 for lone, sending the game into over time at 36 points for each team. lone dominated the over time period by outscoring the Ponies, eight to zero, to make to win 35 - 31. Ione's scoring attack was led by Patty McElligott with eight points. Sandi Wright provided six, while Deena Hams ands Mary Ann Alvara do had five points each. Kris Anderson tacked on three points and Jill Conklin added two. The Cardinals' other two points came from a Heppner player who scored at the wTong basket. The Ponies' Theresa Lind say was the game's leading scorer with nine points. Missy Eubanks helped the cause with eight.
