..! Local bowlers outscore pro By JUSTINE ach year' n,ey are now fore we beeln another fall By JUSTINE WRATIIICKFORD About noon last Monday, Krnle and Cathy Schlegel left lli'lipiUT In their large motor van headed for their real home In Vancouver, Wash. The colorful champion TV howler had kept busy helping many bowlers here and had been outscored by some of them. Both Ernie and Cathy are natives of New York City. They say they had a really pleasing three-night stay In Heppner as houseguests of Doug and Sonia Smith, owners of Heppner Bowl. One local bowler, Merlin Cantln, beat the champ "from scratch" and quite a few men and women beat him using their handicaps against his 200 average handicap. These people won some prize money and will each receive an award that states "I beat Ernie Schlegel, Dec. 1982." On Saturday the Schlegels both bowled, Ernie scored 552 and Cathy made 623. The men who bested Ernie on Saturday were Merlin Cantin, 663, Mick Kendall 580; Riley Munkert, 579; and Ray Massey, 552. That day's women winners were Chris Umanen, 618; Charleen Isom, 615; Katie Mc Robertas, 611; and Harriet Evans, 552. On Sunday Ernie scored 579 and was beaten by seven men with these scores: Norm Kickert. 626; Gene Doherty, 618; Ron Bowman, 616; Gary Van Arsdale, 591; Dave Den ton, 582; Mick Kendall, 580; and Doug Smith 659.
