David and April Hilton Sykes, Publishers J 1 Sheriffs Report UA's Kepbrt Public Meetings' Jiwtice Court Hond Keport , , Hospital Notes Obituaries Elmer Arnold Pieper LEXINGTON Elmer Arnold Pieper, a former Lex ington resident, died at his home near Hermiston No vember 30, 1982, at the age of 56. He was born May 19, 1926 at Portland. After living at Lex ington, he moved to Hermis ton. where be lived for the past 16 years. Mr. Pieper worked as a fanner most of his life in Hermiston and in Morrow County. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge. Hermiston. Funeral services were held December 4 at Burns Mortu ary Chapel, Hermiston, with the Rev. Stuart Dick officia ting. Betty Marquardt was organist and Dave and Pam Piper, vocalists. Casket bear ers were Bill Marquardt, Ken Kathy, Bob Rice, Bob Lov gren. Tad Miller and Lee Bunten. Concluding services and in terment were at Heppner Masonic Cemetery. He was preceeded in death by his father, Arnold G. Pie per in 1970. Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Erda Pieper of Lexington; a son. Rick Pieper of Eugene; a daughter, Lisa Kay Pieper of Eugene; two sisters, Marcie Hall of Port land and Lavelle Brown of Newport; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and a large number of friends, es pecially in Hermiston and Morrow County. Burns Mortuary, Hermis ton, was in charge of arrange ments. Richard Dale White IONE Richard Dale White of lone died December 3 at Tigard Care Center, H gard at the age of 70. He was born September 27, 1912, at Ravalli, Mont, to Thomas and Edith Anderson White. He lived at Roosevelt, Wash, until 1936. He spent a couple of years working in mines in Idaho and then moved to Arlington, where he lived until entering the U.S. Army in 1942. He returned to this area upon completion of military service. He was a member of the American Legion. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 8 at the United Church of Christ, lone, with the Rev. Cathy Barker officiating. Ron McDonald was to be soloist and Rikka Tews, organist. Casketbearers were Bill Rietmann, Paul Tews, John Jepsen, Bob Rietmann, Char les Doherty and Don McElli gott. Graveside services were held Wednesday afternoon at Tahoma Cemetery at Yakima, Wash. He is survived by a brother, Gordon White, of lone. Those who wish may contri bute to the United Church of Christ Memorial Fund. Sweeney Mortuary, Hep pner, was in charage of ar rangements. Death Notice HEPPNER - Leslie R. (Doc) Babb of Heppner, died December 3 at University Health Sciences Hospital, Portland, at the age of 87. He was born September 9, 1895. He lived in Portland before moving to Heppner in 1955. Arrangements are pending. Verlin R. Matthews HEPPNER Verlin R. Matthews. 71, of Heppner, died December 1, 1982, at Pioneer Memorial Hospital, Heppner. He was born July 31, 1911 at Connelly. Idaho to John and Stella Ferguson Matthews. On July 2, 1947, he married Naomi Furlong at Baker. Mr. Matthews was a local resident since 1940 and had been employed at Kinzua Corp. Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 3, at United Methodist Church, Heppner, with the Rev. S. Michael She ridan officiating. Ron McDon ald was soloist and Carley Drake was organist. Casket bearers were Ernie McCabe, Nelson Connor, Pete Schwarrin, Maynard Stru thers, L.D. Tibbies and Jerry Rood. Concluding services and in terment were at heppner masonic Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Naomi Matthews of Heppner; daughters Betty Gentry and Kathy McLeod, both of Van couver, Wash, and Nancy Nichols of Milwaukee, Sandy Greiner of Condon and Verla Charles of Junction City, Calif, and Marilyn Helte of Juneau, Alaska; brothers John Matthews of New Mea dows, Idaho, Cliff Matthews of Cascade. Idaho; sisters Olive Williams of Boise, Idaho, Au drey Graven of Boise, Idaho and Carol York of New Mea dows; 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Senior News A group of Heppner Ele mentary School students will provide entertainment at the Heppner Senior Mealsite on Wednesday, Dec. 15. The group will sing Christmas carols under the direction of Kitty Coon, music instructor at Heppner schools. Any senior citizen desiring a noon carry out meal on Wed nesdays is asked to call Cher rie Clark, 676-5222, or Bill Collins, 676-9947. lone and Lexington resi dents needing a ride to Hep pner on Wednesdays are ask ed to call Dot Halvorsen, 422-7143, to make arrange ments. Seniors attending the noon meal at the mealsite are not charged for transportation. For those over 60 who do not attend, the cost is 75 cents round trip. Cost for commut ers under 60 is $150. Heppner seniors needing a ride to the mealsite should call Mary Nikander, 676-5571, to make arrangements. Heppner Army man promoted James G. Launer Jr., son of James and Beverly Launer of Heppner has been promoted in the U.S. Air Force to the rank of airman first class. Launer is a fuels specialist at McConnell Air Force Base, Kan., with the 381st Supply Squadron. The airman is a 1981 gradu ate of Heppner High School. The Morrow County sher iff's office at the Morrow County Courthouse in Heppner handled the following calls, cases and reports during the past week: On December 1, a Board man emergency medical technician responded to a re quest for an ambulance at a railroad depot for a man who reportedly had a heart attack. The patient was taken to Dr. Lobb's office at Boardman. Also on December 1, the Boardman Police Department recovered a stolen bike for the Enders family of Boardman. In a third December 1 inci dent, a Morrow County sher iffs deputy arrested Cynthia M. Bristow, 19, of Hermiston for allegedly Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants following a two-vehicle acci dent on Interstate 84, one mile east of Boardman. She repor tedly received minor injuries but was not transferred from the accident site for treat ment. Driver of the second vehicle, Halyan Hendrickson of Abercrombie, N.D., who was driving a tractor trailer, was not injured. On December 2, Bob Rose of Pacific Rock Products. Pen dleton, reported two hydraulic cylinders had been stolen from their paving machine sometime between November 9 and 30. The machine was parked on Patterson-Ferry Road. The cylinders were valued at $500. In a second December 2 report, a Boardman ambu lance responded to a call requesting an ambulance at the David Coombes residence, Boardman. A male, who had been involved in a motor vehicle accident, was trans ported to Consolidated Good Shepherd Hospital at Hermis ton. Also on December 2, Mrs. WE. Nelson of Boardman requested an ambulance, the patient, a possible heart at tack victim, was transported to Consolidated Good Shep herd HospitaL Hermiston. On December 4, a Board man ambulance responded to a call from the Texaco station, Boardman, for a man who reportedly was bleeding from a cut on his arm. He was transported to Consolidated Good Shepherd Hospital, Hermiston. Also on December 4, a Pio neer Memorial Hospital am bulance responded to a call from the Ed Bergstrom resi dence. A patient was transpor ted to Pioneer Memorial Hos pital. Heppner. On December 5, a Morrow County sheriff's deputy ar rested Bryan Edward Oliver, 39, of Boardman, for alleged Criminal Negligence of a Minor. He posted bail and was released. In another December 5 inci dent, a Morrow County sher iff's deputy took a theft report from Kenneth W. Rogers of Irrigon. Reported missing were a 22 caliber rifle and a book of blank checks. The value of the gun was not avail able Monday, Dec. 6. Lrster Norman Moen, 55, of Boardman, appeared in Mor row County Circuit Court on December 2 for allegedly Driving While Suspended. No verdict wss returned due to a hung jury, reported Morrow County District Attorney Ann Spicer. A re-trial date has not yet been set, she said. In other news, Spicer repor ted Clinton Barker, 29, of Irrigon and Daniel Cannon, 21, of Hood River, both appeared in Morrow County Circuit Court December 1 on charges of alleged First Degree Crim inal Mischief. They were both found guilty and were placed on six months probation and were sentenced to each pay $200 restitution to Bonneville Power Administration. Health Dept. Engagements Wilson McCabe Mr. and Mrs. Ernest McCabe of Heppner announce the engagement of their daughter, Laurie, to Dan Wilson the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wil Wilson of Dayton. Fuel assistance program under local way in By NEOLA MACKEY Those who have not been contacted for the fuel assis tance program (L.1.E.A.P) are asked to call the Heppner Neighborhood Center, 676-5873 for an appointment. Applica tions will then be sent. Ap pointments must be made for the program. Mrs. Holly bur ton is mailing out applications as fast as she can. Everyone is asked to please be patient as there is a list of 100 applicants and she is just a part time employee. Christmas baskets are being prepared at the center and those with donations are asked to take them to the center as soon as possible. Food, quality clothing and toys or any monetary donations for the Christmas dinner will be greatly appreciated. A Social Security represen tative will be at the center on Friday, Dec. 10 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. An Adult and Family Ser vices counselor will be avail able at the center December 15 and 22 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Ladies who attend the Thursday craft-social time at the center will hold their annual Christmas party De- area cember 16. Ladies are asked to bring one gift for exchange. A fall birthday party with a potluck lunch will also be held December 16. Judy Creighton will be at the center on Wednesday, Dec. 15 at 1 p.m. to give job training techniques. This program is for single parent households that are receiving aid for dependent childrfen. The pur pose of the the program is to upgrade job skills, learn how to write resumes and how to apply for jobs. Pat Brindle, center coordi nator, will be in lone at the Bank of Eastern Oregon De cember 27 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. to process applications that are being mailed to eligi ble fuel assistance clients. A Peterson's jr c & Heppner ' 676-9200 The Morrow County Public Works Department has re leased the following Work report for the week ending Pwember 4: Pot holes were patched with cold mix on Lena Hlsler, Pine City to Lena, and lone Goose berry roads. Weeds and grass were burned from the road sides of Alpine Nelson, Dale Brown, Lower Sandhollow, Wells Springs, Barlow Canyon, Mel ville. Juniper, Cecil, Doherty Alpine, Baker E.W. and the lone Boardman Road. Blade work was done on Keck Canyon, Melville. N.S. Campbell Ranch, Wells Springs, Toll Rock and the Dale Brown Road. Culvert extensions were in stalled on McElligott Road and the Bombing Range Road. Culverts were cleaned on numerous roads throughout the county. In the north end of Morrow County, cold patching was done on Wilson Road and Idaho Street. A culvert was installed on Washington Street. Brush and weeds were burned from the sides of sev eral roads and culverts were cleaned. Patients admitted and re leased from Pioneer Memor ial Hospital at Heppner during the past week include: IRoy Gardner, Heppner admitted November 28, re leased November 29; Leslie Babb, Heppner ad mitted November 28, trans ferred to University Health Sciences Hospital, Portland, where he died December 3; Cecilia Bucknum, Heppner admitted November 28, re leased December 1; and Marjory Dav'8- Fo8l,iI ' admitted December 1, re leased December 3. Another patient at the hos pital, Richard Schmidt Sr., who was admitted December 2, was still receiving care at the hospital as of Monday, Dec. 6. Landfill closures announced The Morrow County Public Works Department has an nounced that the Morrow County Landfill near Heppner will be closed December 25 and January 1.
