October 21. 1982 lone Garden Club meets "The Songs and Flight of Birds" was the subject for discussion at the lone Garden Club meeting, led by Delta Huber, on Wednesday, Oct. 13. Ruth McCabe and Pat Petty john were hostesses. Mrs. Huber stated that birds are very useful to the gardener because they help to control insects, act as a sanitation squad to clean up debris, and ocnsume weed seeds, said a club spokesperson. Plantings to attract birds may be made in one's garden. A thicket of raspberries, blackberries and elderberries may attract as many as 100 species of birds. These include the chipping sparrow, towhee. flicker, wren, hairy woodpecker, yellow warbler, golden crown kinglet, barn owl and bludbird. Some of these birds have been seen during the Christmas bird count which is held annually by bird lovers in Morrow County. Books that can give an amateur bird watcher help in identifying birds are Roger Tory Peterson's book "A Field Guide to Western Birds" and the "Golden Guide to Field Identification Birds of North America" by Robins, Bruun, Zim and Singer. While refreshments were being served, a tape of differ ent bird calls was played and members enjoyed hearing familiar songs of birds they recognized, the spokesperson concluded. The Bonds live on the corner of W. Second Street. A garden club spokesperson said the Bond's yard was chosen for the award because of its neatness and continuous blooms, from early spring to Oregon students score well Oregon high school juniors and senors last year outscored their national contemporaries on all four tests administered by the American College Test ing Program, according to Verne A Duncan, state super intendent of schools. Nearly 1.400 Oregon college bound students were tested for their general educational de velopment and ability to com plete college-level work in English, math, social studies and natural science. The Oregon average on all tests was 19.3. up from 19.2 in the previous year, while the national average dropped from 18.5 to 18.4, he said. Following are Oregon scores on individual tests with national scores listed in parentheses- English 18 8 (17.9), math 17.5 (17.2), social studies 18.6 (17.3), natural science 21.8 (20 8).
