56 participate in Lions Club Men's Golf Tournament Fifty-six men participated In a Heppner Lions Club Men's Tm.rmrnt at Willow Creek Country Club last Sunday. This year's turnout was the largest the annual event has seen, said George Koffler of the Lions Club. Golfers played a qualifying round and only nine of 18 holes because of the rainstorm. Champion of the tourna ment was Treve Gray of Pen dleton with a low score of 28 for nine holes, two under par. Winners of the first flight were Paul Stringer, first place with a 29, John Edmundson second, both of Heppner; Lar ry Monkus of Pendleton, third place; Oscar Shoemaker, Boardman, fourth place; and Charlie Starks of Heppner and Ron Gray of Pendleton tied for fifth and sixth places. Four teen ladies participated In the event. The winning team, with a score of 39, was consisted of Bev Gunderson, Bev Wilson, and Eileen Padberg. They each won a golf ball for their efforts. Tim Birkby, coach for the Heppner J V, team felt that "The team played well considering they have never playprf an a unit before." Despite the final score, things didn't look so bright during halftime when the two teams were stalemat ed with no score. In the second half though, the Mustangs tightened up to start scoring and finally won the game. Couch Birkby com mented that the reason f jr this sudden comeback was through a, "tightening down of the defense. We owe the game to good offense and the specialty teams.
