Our concerts at the high schools were warmly received and helped us prepare for the competition in Vancouver. The Madrigal Singers were awarded the top medal given at the festival and the other Caldwell groups also did ex tremely well. Special thanks to Monica Swanson of lone and Nancy Brownfield of Heppner Spring Music Program, Art Show slated Thurs. Heppner students in grades five through eight will present a Spring Music Program on Thursday. May 27. 7:30 p.m. at the Heppner Junior High School gym. The concert will be held in conjunction with an Art Show, which will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the elementary Rent, utility assistance available. Allen Nistad. owner of Ever green Apartments in Heppner, has reported that 15 Heppner families can receive assist ance on the increased cost of utilities and rent. The 24 ur.;t complex has 15 two-bedroom units eligible for Farmers Home Rental Assistance. These families are expected to pay 25 percent of their adjust ed monthly income in rent, said Nistad. For example: a gross an nual income of $4,800. less a five percent deduction of $240. Infant and Children (WIC). will soon be handled through the Heppner Neighborhood Center. WIC is a supplemental feeding program for those meeting the eligibility cri teria. Pat Brindle. coordinator of the center, will receive training for handling the pro gram in Hermiston June 2. More information on the new program will be announced at a later date. Most of the arrangements were taken to the Pioneer Memorial Hospital to be enjoyed by the nursing home residents. The Heppner Neighborhood Center Advisory Council met Monday night. May 24. at the center. A nominating; commit tee was appointed by the chairman. The committee will report to the council in July for the election of new offic ers. Wedding Berg, strom Mary Maben, daughter of Marilyn Fillis, Omak, Wash., and Emery Gorbett of Moalla, and Bruce Bergstrom, son of Marlene Peterson and Robert Bergstrom, both of Heppner, were united in marriage on Saturday, May 8, at the Morrow County Courtyard. Morrow County Justice of the Peace Charlotte S. Gray performed the ceremony. The bride was given in marriage by her father. Vickie Turrell of Heppner was matron of honor . and Angie Bergstrom was flower girl. Dick Turrell of Heppner was best man and Trampas Bergstrom and Jacob Maben were ring bearers. Guests included Iva Booker, grandmother of the groom, and Dianne Gorbett, stepmother of the bride. Following the ceremony, a wedding reception was held at the couple's home in Heppner. Rita Bergstrom of Heppner, sister-in-law of the groom, served punch and Shelly Biddle of Heppner, attended the guest book. After a wedding trip to Omak, the couple returned to Heppner where the bride is employeed at the Morrow County District Attorney's office and the groom at Crum Ranches, lone. lone Garden Club visits four area gardens A most enjoyable and edu cational day was spent by lone Garden Club members on May 12 when they visited four gardens in the Heppner area, said a Club spokesperson. The gardens of the John Wood and Glenn Smith fam ilies were viewed and showed the result of long established practices of older gardens. Newer gardens at the Larry Mills and Elvyn Bell homes showed some of the newer and imaginative plantings pos sible in the area, the spokes person said. Following a no-host lunch- W.C.C.C. summer hours announced Summer hours at Willow Creek County Club have re cently been announced by a club spokesperson. Tuesday morning ladies play will begin with coffee at 8 a m. and the group will tee off at 8:30 a m., said the spokes person. Aamtnistration. rentals are based on operating costs of the complex with no provision for profit margin or depreciation. A reserve account is establish ed for major repairs. Members expressed their ap preciation of the manicured appearance of the gardens and felt encouraged to make use of inanimate objects such as rocks, snags and bark as well as to grow flowering shrubs and trees that are not usually indigenous to this area. Following the meeting re freshments were served by Jean Nelson and Pat Pettyjohn. Christian Women's Club to meet Tues. TheCbristian Women's Club will meet Tuesday. June 1. at the Heppner Degree of Honor Hall at fi:45 p.m. for a straw berry shortcake dessert. Theme for the June meeting will be "What's My Color?" Special feature for the evening "Color By Seasons." will be given by Kathy Hageman and Marilee McDowell, both of Heppner. They will present a program on how to determine which colors are complimen tary to a person and colors that are fashionable for each season. According to a news release from the Umatilla National Forest office in Pendleton, nonp of the Heppner Ranger District frails have opened yet. Vehicle travel for all recreation activities should be confined to surfaced 'gravel ) roads. Tnsurfaced roads are very soft and muddy, the news release continued. The Fancy Frosters cake decorating club 4-H met April 29. Club leader Jan Coe propos ed a slumber party be held for members. Mrs. Coe decorated a cake for the group and then mem bers practice making decora tions individually. On May 6. the group decor ated Mother's Day cakes for a bake sale. The group met again on May 13 discussed the slumber party. The club members rode the school bus to Mrs. Coe's home after school on Friday. Saturday morning, they trav eled to a Pendleton store and visited the store's bakery, to see their cake decorating pro cedures. I-ater that afternoon, the group returned to wash cars in the 4-H car wash. The theft occurred between Mav 5 and Mav 6. Also on May IB. the Board man Fire Department re sonded to a grass fire at 303 Columbia Place. Boardman. On May 19. the Hoard man Police Department responded to an armed robbery at the Circle K store in Roardman. The robbery took place at about 3:50 a m Two males took an undetermined amount of cash from the register at knife point. In another May 19 incident. James LaVern Godden, 4f. was arrested in Boardman by a Morrow County Sheriff's deputy for alleged Fourth De gree Assault. Godden was lod ged at the Umatilla Police Department Jail On May 22. a one vehicle accident occurred on Goose boerry Road at the top of lone grade. Driver of the vehicle was Jay A.
