Invitational By MIOHKI.I.K 1-ARl'E The Cardinal tracksters traveled to Moro for a Sherman County Invitational on Saturday. April 17. The Cardinals fought to the very end for the second place trophy as they edged Lyle by one-half of a point. The boys 1,600 meter relay team finish ed second to give the Cardi nals the points they needed for the trophy, the Cardinals finished with 104 points. Margaret Doherty was a double winner for the Cardi nals as she took first in the 400 meter run in a time of 65 seconds flat and the 200 meters in 29.40. Doherty also placed second in the 100 meter run with a time of 13.45 seconds. Michelle LaRue placed fifth in the javelin with a throw of 79'iou". a personal best for LaRue. LaRue also competed in the discus. Men's play begins Wed., April 28 and those interested may contact Dave Hanna or sign up at the new club house, said a spokesperson. The club will host a visitation on Sunday, April 25; Echo will visit on Sunday. May 2; and morning men's play and an afternoon family barbecue will be held Sunday, April 9. (PATCH), formerly the Com mittee to Save the Neighbor hood Center, will hold a white elephant sale May 21 and 22 at the center. Proceeds from the sale will be put into a special fund for emergency use, and to fund projects that otherwise don't receive funds. Donations are welcome. The Cardinals 1.600 meter relay team pulled them ahead to finish second overall. The relay team, consisting of Leavitt, Patton, Craig Hams and Taylor edged Sherman by a nose for second place and had a personal best of 4:00.83. Sherman took the first place trophy with 2294 points fol lowed by lone with 104. and Lyle Close behing with 1034. Other teams scoring were Arlington with . Riverside 95. Umatilla 73. Heppner 69. Little League baseball final tryouts will be held this Saturday. April 24. said Ted Toll, league president. Interested youths, ages nine to 12. should meet at the Little League field at the fair grounds in Heppner at 1 p.m. The Little League season will begin Saturday. May 15. Toll said. HHS baseball team wins one, loses one in double header By GLENN SMITH Saturday. April 17. the Heppner Mustangs' baseball team hosted Sherman Co. in a double header that ended with each team scoring a victory. In game one. Sherman Co. took an early lead on the Mustangs in the first innings but Heppner snapped back, and going into the seventh inning, was only behind Sher man by one run with a score of four to three. Then back to back doubles by Mark Way and Travis Hyatt helped to tie the ball game. In the last inning with tw o outs. Sherman intentional ly walked John Murray, but was not so lucky the next round when Greg Connor hit the next pitch for an opposite field home run to win the game, seven to four. Leading hitters for the Mustangs were Bruce Way and Mark Way with three hits apiece. John Murray was two for three.
