KIOHT- The Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon, Thursday, April 8, 1982 Mustangs The Heppner Mustangs opened the 1982 baseball season playing five games in the week, winning two, losing two and having one called for darkness. "We've shown we can score runs, but our pitching hasn't come around yet," said Mus tang Coach Dale Holland, Heppner track season opened Saturday The Heppner High School track team opened the 1982 spring season short on num bers but found talent and depth at the Condon Invita tional at Condon last Satur day. "We scored in every event we were entered in, except one. and in some events had two individuals place," said coach Dale Conklin. The end result was the girls team placed second in an 11-team field. ARTE In the first track meet of the year the Cardinal boys finish ed third with 57 points in the Condon Invitational, on Satur day. The Cardinals got a first place from Denny Starr in the discus with a throw of 112 feet. Siarr also placed fourth in the javelin with a toss of 113'8-V. Craig Hams finished second in th" lone jump with a leap of WH1 1' Hams placed fourth in the triple jump with a jump of Wl and sixth in the 200 mefer dash in a lime of 25. Tim Patton finished with two fourth places, one in the high jump with a jump of 5'10" and the other in the 1500 meter run in a time of 4:58.4. Howard Leavitt placed fifth with a jump of 5'8" in the high jump. Donnie Taylor finished second in the 110 meter hurdles in a time of 18:02 The Cardinals finished third Hep. High golfers lost in dual meet The Heppner High Boys and Girls Golf Team participated in a dual meet last Thursday April 1 at Willow Run in Boardman. The Riverside boys won. 309 to 342 as did the Riverside girls. 181 to 203. 'The girls golfed nine holes-, the boys eighteen). Low for Heppner and medal ist of the meet was last year's .state qualifier Don Lott with a 65. over par. Low for Hep pner 's girls was Lorri Day with a 45. Both Don and Lorri lead a youthful varsity team this year with Don and Lorri being the only seniors The rest of both the boys and girls varsity squads consist of three sopho mores and a freshman. The girls team was led last year by state qualifier Lottie tnighlin who graduated. HS Rodeo team 2nd in Eugene On Thursday and Friday. April 1 and 2, the Heppner High School Rodeo team competed in Eugene and returned with the following results: Boys: Jack McQuire, third in calf roping: Marty Britt, third in Bulldogging; Don Kindsfather. second in bull dogging and third in team roping - Lindsay Claver; Cliff Dougherty, second team rop ing - Scott Skramstad. Girls: Tara Mahoney, fifth in goat tying, sixth in pole- Parents' class set Apr. 14 Expectant Parents class will begin Wednesday, April 14. Doherty placed third in the 100 meter dash (her time was 13.38) and third in the 400 meter dash in a time of 1:05. Michelle LaRue competed in the discus and javelin but didn't place. The Cardinals' next action will be the Morrow County Invitational at Umatilla on Saturday. April 10. Coach Duane Neiffer is quite pleased with this years turnout of eighteen golfers adding that "We're young but we have kids showing some real enthusiasm this year and we hope to be much more competitive by district time." Scott Skramstad, Milton Freewater, was Ail-Around Boy and Ail-Around girl was Tina Cook of Redmond. John Day received team trophy for first and Heppner was second. Heppner w ill be on the track again this Saturday hosting the annual Morrow County Invitational at Umatilla.
