FOUR-The Heppner Gaiette-Times, Heppner, Oregon, Thursday, March 4, 1982 Save the Children sponsors letter-writing campaign Children from across the country are being invited to share their concerns with top government leaders through the fifth annual national letter-writing campaign spon sored by Save the Children, the international child-assistance agency. The theme for this year's letters is: "Dear Mr. Presi dent, If I had one wish for the world's children..," said a news release from Save the Children. The campaign will culmi nate during Save the Children Week, May 1-7, in Washington, D.C. At that time, all letters will be presented at a child- HHS to host tri-county music festival The annual Tri County Choral Music Festival will be held at Heppner High School, Tuesday, March 9 at 7:30p.m. in the gym. Heppner instruct or Kitty Coon has announced. Schools participating in the event will include Pilot Rock, Stanfield. Umatilla. Dufur, Arlington. Condon, Riverside, Helix. Whatonka. Echo. Sher man County and Weston-Mc-Ewen. said Coon. The students will rehearse all day in preparation for the evenings concert. The partici- P.M.H. Foundation meets, holds election 'terms, alter which the board The annual meeting of the Pioneer Memorial Hospital Foundation was held Feb ruary 26 and was continued to February 22 due to a lack of quorum, stated A.K. Felt, foundation secretary. (The by laws provide for the hospital administrator to serve as secretary of the foundation.) Seven foundation members were elected to the board of directors and lots were drawn to determine the length of Seniors entertained at Heppner Mealsite By JUSTINE. HEATHERFORD Recent noon programs which have delighted those attending the senior, mealsite on Wednesday noons have included colored slides of Australia shown by Kris Donaldson and on Feb. 24 the singing of Ron McDonald. Seniors kept calling put re quests to'the jovial McDonald and would have kept him singing much longer if pos sible. Next week on March 10, Marv Goheen will show and narrate the colored slides of her last fall's trip into China. Swim team parents slate Mar. 4 planning meeting Heppner swim team parents and all interested persons are invited to attend the first planning meeting for the 1982 season. The meeting will be held Thursday, March 4, 7:30 p.m. at Columbia Basin Elec tric Co-op Conference room. The hiring of coaching staff Retired Educators Assoc, to meet March 6 Unit 9 Oregon Retired Educator's Association will meet in the Free Methodist Church at S.W. 44th St. across from McKay School in Pendle ton, March 6, at 11 a.m. Dr. John Jambura will 1 Mick's a Nice Guy I! ren's hearing in the U.S. Congress and at the White House. The topics expressed most frequently by the child ren will form the 1982 Child ren's Agenda for Action. This summary of concerns will also be the kickoff of the new Children's Congress in Wash ington at which elementary school children, representing every state, will meet to address the problems facing today's youth, the news re lease continued. Coon added. Six numbers will be performed by the combined choirs (mass choir) and some choirs will perform individual ly.. The students will perform under the direction of Bill Mayclin of Pendleton High School. Charges for the concert will be $1 for adults and 50 cents for children and students through grade 12. On February 24 the Soutli Morrow Ministerial Association mem bers attended the mealsite luncheon in a body and were introduced by Mealsite Chair man Bill Collins. This week, Wednesday. March 3. Karen Thomas. R.N. was testing blood pressure before the meal as she does the first Wednesday of each month. and suggestions for fund-raising projects will be discussed, said a spokesperson. Ackley Scholarship Fund open to donations By MARY ANN CERULLO The Ackley Scholarship Fund has opened a savings account with the Bank of Eastern Oregon and is cur rently available to the public for donations, Jim Ackley announced last week. The Ackley Scholarship con sists of two awards, the Bill Kenny .Music Education award and the Bonnie Nix John Bier Outstanding Service Award. These are presented annually to deserving gradu ating seniors. Monday evening, March 8. He was president of the Oregon Wheat Growers' League in 1979, is currently serving as the secretary-treasurer of the National Association of Wheat Growers and is slated to become president of that national association in 1984. Pryor will talk about the status of the economy of Oregon and the U.S. presently and in the future. He will also review the impact that Oregon's long special legislative session has had on the Department of Economic Development. The February USDA Farmer's newsletter on wheat gives a budgeting method that farmers can use to compare the returns from participation vs. non-participation in the program. Growers can get a copy of the USDA newsletter by calling or stopping by the OSU Extension Service office in Heppner. A major benefit of the new farm program is a deficiency can." said Ackley. On Thursday, March 18, Jim Ackley will hold his first fund raising concert which will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Heppner High School cafetor ium. Tickets will be $2 per person with no charge to preschool children. All pro ceeds will go toward the scholarship fund. Any civic group or private individual who would like to participate in the Ackley Scholarship Fund is welcome, state Ackley. state. Farnam was a La Grande businessman and was very active in civic affairs there before he became a staff member of the state depart ment. During his World War II Navy service. Earl Pryor attended the College of Colo rado and the University of Oklahoma where he gained a degree with a major in Naval Science and a minor in Electrical Engineering. Pryor's family began farm ing in Gilliam County very early in this century and is now in its fourth generation. His father, Emmet Earl Pryor and his mother, .Julila Lucille Jones Pryor are remembered by many here. Earl now operates the ranch they estab lished. Mrs. Earl Pryor was Sena B. Petroff of The Dalles. The Pryors have two children, Marc and Ty. It was previously announced that John N. Groupe, director of the state department would be the banquet speaker, but because of his announced resignation, Groupe and the commission felt that it would be better to have Commission er Pryor speak. Growers who participate In the program must reduce their normal acreage of win ter wheat by 15 percent. The new program wasn't announced until mid-January. Most wheat growers planted their normal acreage in the fall and must take out part of their established crop to participate in the farm program.
